1366 X58 Xeon 5650

I've got a noctua cooler but I want to leave that on the board I'm swapping out of my lian li case. I probably won't be overclockers it so not really bothered about the temps just wanted to try a AIO for a change but it's got to be a single fan because of the lian li case.

then any single AIO you like would be fine, might even get away with some OC.

The whole point of getting these cpu is the overclocking potential, free performance. To each their own i suppose.

Question for you guys... my Auzentech sound card is starting to die, and I've picked up a new Creative AE-5 for £80. However, reading reviews and forums, I'm not sure the value of add-in sound cards now that they do not offer hardware acceleration, with most people saying to use onboard audio or get an external DAC. The Creative card has a great DAC and amp, based on reviews, but how does the onboard sound perform on the Asus P6T Deluxe?

In terms of connectivity, I use reasonably OK 5.1 powered speakers that have analogue connections (with an external DAC doesn't support), plus Beyerdynamic MMX 300 headphones and Audio Technica ATH-AD700 headphones.

I can still send the Creative AE-5 back at this point. I know I need to test myself (not had time yet), but wanted to also ask you folks.

Which one would you recommend? there's that many of them.

It's not the whole point in getting one some people might just want an upgrade and because you can get one of these so cheaply it's an upgrade worthwhile even @ stock speeds. I may try and overclock it see what it can do, it actually arrived today not had time to even look at it yet.

I'm on air cooling with a Hyper 612S with MX4 TIM. Temps at 4.8 Ghz when under normal desktop use, browsing etc are between 21-32 deg C. These CPU's run at superb temps even under air.

4.8ghz, that is an impressive overclock. What cpu, voltage and motherboard is that? is it prime stable?

either way great chip you have there, on water I bet you could get close to 5.0ghz.

I think I posted screenshots of BIOS settings a good few pages back within this thread not long after I picked up the wee Xeon. Can't recall if I started at 4.2 and crept upwards back then or if I posted screenies at that point. It's on an Asus P6X58D-E.

What I'm worried about with using an air cooler in this lian li case is the orientation of the cooler itself I have a Noctua NH-U12P cooler and I had to fit it with the fan blasting downwards towards the PSU because it wouldn't fit facing so the fan was blowing out like this setup (not my setup)

This is why I'm thinking of getting a AIO water cooler because I don't know if the Noctua fan I have will fit this way on a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 and in this case.

Ah.....I see. I'm currently using a Zalman Z3 case and the Hyper 612S is set up in a 'push/pull' fan configuration, I've got plenty of airflow in there, cables are all routed on the underside of the mobo. 2 x intake fans on the front, 2 x exhaust on the rear. Two exhaust fans on the top of the case.

Got another dilemma which cooler to put on the x5675

Just took the other motherboard out of the case I am putting the xeon into. Coming out of this case was a socket 775 system which has a Noctua NH-U12P cooler fitted to it. I have purchased a cheaper Coolmaster Hyper 212 Evo instead of buying a AIO water cooler. The problem I have now is which cooler do I install on the xeon? I can't make my mind up.

If I do overclock the xeon it won't be by much but what I have read about the Evo cooler it can handle the xeon quite well.

They will both be fine if you are not planning to overclock much, i mean they will both be able to cool the little overclock you will aim for. But if you want maximum cooling for maximum stable overclock the Noctua is a better cooler but on the flip side the 212Evo is no slouch either. Pick the one that best suits your case dimension and airflow direction. You cont want it all exhausted into your case either, will just heat up your other components.

Finally got my x5675 up and running having a few problems though with the ram. In the last set up I was using I7920, 9GB of ram mixed ram as well, 3 x 2GB OCZ 10666 Gold and 3 x 1GB Corsair 13333 the system was stable and windows noticed the full 9GB after me changing it in the maximum memory. Though now I have 6x2GB running and I can't get windows to use all 12GB even though it's having no problem seeing it.

BIOS pic (sorry had to take it with mobile)

I've noticed bank 5&6 is empty

You have to play around with the DRAM voltage and QPI voltage. To get my 6x2gb to run at 1600mhz I need to apply 1.66v on the ram and 1.33v on the QPI, that could be your issue.

Also my asus p6t sometimes craps out in the bios and doesn't say 12gb ram on the boot screen, however cpu-z will report 12gb. I don't know which is right.

I also found my board is finnicky with which order the ram is put into the motherboard. Despite my sticks coming from two matching sets, weird.

Tried everything on the voltages messing about with anything bar loading default settings and the motherboard is showing a C1 error then takes about 10 seconds to decide to kick into booting up.

I'm same as you m8 2 sets of matching sticks.
