1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Hmm. Well 4.7 works at 1.43v and seems stable for games and benchmarks, however I get random reboots. Mostly when the computer isn't doing anything.

4.5 with 1.39v works well and is IBT stable with no rebooting. I could probably get the voltage a bit lower also, but it seemed to be working well so I left it where it was.

Morning gents, would trying to grab one of these chips, mobo and RAM be worthwhile for me? I was looking at spending 250-300 on a new mobo/chip/RAM setup but if I could nab myself an old server hexcore, mobo and ram then what would my outlay be? Roughly?

I'd like to go x99 but would be later on when prices come down. Would this older hexcore setup be worthwhile investment?

Can someone recommend to me a board, ram to go with a chip too? I know little about server chips so needing to know all I can first.

My investment has been -

My workstation - X5670 - £99, Mobo P6T £40, 12GB RAM free from an old server system
My server - X5650 - £69, Mobo P6TSE free from an old server, 24GB RAM from an old system

Not sure if it really makes sense starting from scratch but if you've got some of the bits already its definately a potent setup.

If, and it's a big if, you can find the board for a reasonable price then IMO it's well worth it.

That 1103 in Cinebench @ 4.85ghz? that's 150 points or so shy of my 3970x @ 4.9ghz.

Now obviously not many will clock that high, but, even at 4.2ghz which is almost a given for these Xeons that's still about the same level of potency as buying a 4790k/Z97 set up. Only thing is? the Z97 system costs twice as much.

CPU support has improved a lot since these Xeons were launched. TBH? as stupid as it sounds they're probably more valid and more useful now than they were when Intel released them. Now obviously I do understand these are Xeons and as thus, were fully supported at launch by the software they were designed to be running (server, workstation ETC) but the 970, 980x and 990x were all sold as desktop parts to fit desktop boards.

If anything it's all down to Intel's eagerness to kill off AMD (which they know now they can't do because they can't dominate the console market) and them releasing too much power too soon.

And it's also why my 3970x won't fully come into its own until around five years of its shelf life either.

I would say a limit of £100 for a board (and that would be a top end board like the Gigabyte Assassin or SOC) and then £70 for the CPU. That leaves you enough for 8gb of ram (you don't need more than 1600mhz IMO) and you certainly don't absolutely have to have triple channel either. X58 can run dual channel no problems.

I know where my £250 would go.

That's really good to know, cheers.

How would a cooler fit on the CPU? Would it (h100i) fit or would I need to get another cooler?

I'm thinking that I could get a xenon chip, mobo and some 1600 ram to keep me going a year or so until I save up enough to buy a new motherboard bundle outright...like the £700 x99 setup in the shop just now.

Everything else I have is in my sig and I'm thinking I don't need to buy anything more? I guess it's all about the motherboard right? Get the right board, decent chip and ram and I'm off. I'd be looking to get the hexcore to 4.0 which would suit me fine for gaming and general use :) Is this doable?

Find the board first and then work from there. The chips are abundant :)

1366 or x58 board is what you want. Though tbh getting a x chip if you already have a system is a good value upgrade. Spending money on a chip and board will increase the cost to a point where you might as well get newer stuff.

Yeah I guess you might have a point. Although getting a good modern setup for £200 would be very hard unless I was again going down the route of a second hand setup so it might be a much of a muchness.

Does anyone else's overclock need two or three reboots when you turn the machine on? Mines running at 4.0Ghz on the Gigabyte UD5 but for some reason, it seems to restart itself a couple of times at boot. Once it's in windows it's fine.

I'm running 6 sticks of memory if that's maybe the issue.

I'm running a 5650 in a UD5 with 6 sticks of Corsair Vengeance 1600. I've not had any issues with restarts on boot, but the POST process does take a while (appprox 10 secs) while the memory is identified (shows C1 on the status panel on the motherboard whilst this is taking place).

Perhaps you need to up the volts a bit for the RAM/memory controller?

Same here on a P6T SE, wont cold boot first time at 4.0ghz with 1.65v through the dram (Kingston Hyperx Genesis 1866 3x4GB). Rock stable in windows like yours. My other problem is heat, I'm using a Thor's Hammer with an Akasa Viper and when stress testing with burn test the hottest core is hitting 84oC, thats with the cpu volts at 1.32

Mine used to need a reset after cold boot to get going but it sorted itself out. I'm not sure what fixed it unfortunately.

My chip and board came to £130, I'm struggling to think of anything that will compete for the price so long as you can get a decent overclock. Bear in mind though you do lose sata3 and usb3.
