1366 X58 Xeon 5650

If I went X99 I would be sorely tempted to go with MATX. Asrock and Gigabyte both make drop dead gorgeous MATX boards.

From what I've seen from my Titans with a 770 stuffed between them the stock coolers do very well in a wedgie. Mind you, nothing to stop you using two AIOs on the GPUs and an AIO on the CPU. You could really pack some awesome power per square inch doing that.

One gripe I do have with my beast rig is the size of the damn thing. Now granted, I need it, but it's a git to keep clean and dust free. It takes me nearly an hour to heave it off of the desk and clean it all through.

I guess for me the next logical step is AIO cooling my GPUs. Would cost me about £150 ish to do both. Would really bring noise down too.
 
Wish Valve would hurry up with their new Source engine, probably make me want to upgrade more if it needs the horse power. I wonder how long until we find out the real performance of Skylake though, it may not even turn out to be anything special.

Smaller cases are indeed getting more attractive.

I had a coolermaster stacker 832 for years. Moved to a smaller Corsair case recently and I'm very happy with the results.

Once I transition to a M.2 drive for my boot drive this year, I'll consider an even smaller case.
 
Running two 970s, clocked at 1.5ghz core with the Xeon at 4.5ghz.

It power through Crysis 3 at 1440p maxed out :D

I just took the plunge big time and bought a 30" Hazro running 1600p here from OCUK. I was going to go 4k but the extra cost and crap hz put me off. Last thing I want is to be limited to 30 FPS. Sod that !
 
Anyone got any good feelings about next year in cpu performance? I wonder if AMD will catch up fairly close to Intel, but even if that happens i think performance overall may still be stuck at a wall for a while.

I'll run it shortly. I am running the second card at PCIe 2.0 x8 which I don't think is going to help it, but x16/x16 means them being together and the heat is too much.

Just done an hour on Crysis 3 and my room is now sweltering hot. Amazing the heat the thing puts out.
 
X8 shouldn't affect scores too badly. I can't even remember my Firestrike scores now will have to run it again but I know these Titans overclock very well indeed.

It used to be that larger cases were ideal due to the extra cooling available but now that isn't really necessary. A smaller ATX case with mATX works fine for most scenarios...I reckon only multi-GPU users need ATX boards and large cases these days.
 
I'd be interested in your settings for 4.5Ghz if you could post them down.

Indeed, I am running 1440p at the moment and it seems to run well. People forget that it's 3.6MP vs. 2MP at 1080p so a serious step up.

I am going for a 3440x1440 screen once things settle down, i.e. a few of the other models are released and reviewed. But at 5MP I'm not sure this system will hack running games maxed out at that resolution unfortunately. I am running 2x MSAA on Crysis though, should be able to get some performance back from dropping that to FXAA...

...and just realised my RAM is running at 533mhz. Must have put the multiplier down when I was testing 210. Will sort that and try again in case it makes any difference.
 
Is it reporting 533mhz as DRAM speed okay or odd?

BIOS was definately on x8 for 1640mhz...

It's not bad for a motherboard I bought 6 years ago for about 130 quid and a CPU I paid 88 quid for last month is it :D

That's pretty high Vcore!

What is your QPI PLL volatage? As that should be the same as your IOH Core (in your case 1.20v)
 
I didn't know that. It's on default, 1.1v. What's the reason they should be linked?

To be honest I had my IOH at that voltage from my 920 days, not sure the Xeon needs it, may drop back to default and see if it's okay.

Turns out its 1.40625v in BIOS.

How many graphics cards do you run?

If it's 2 then you will want at least 1.20v

Common voltages (32nm Westmere)
VCore - directly related to the CPU frequency. Chances are if the cpu frequency doesn't change then this does not need to be changed. "Safe" for overclocking voltages range from 0.9-1.4V (intel spec).
QPI voltage/CPU vtt- Any change in CPU frequency for 32nm chips. If you change the BCLK, the memory frequency will change. This voltage also affects the uncore stability indirectly. "Safe" for overclocking voltages range from 1.1-1.4V (intel spec). ***CAUTION*** Raising the vtt beyond 1.35V has shown to damage 32nm based chips. This observation was made by a number of overclockers, and the information is to be used as a measure of caution. If you're approaching the intel spec MAX for this voltage then you are getting dangerously close to causing damage. Approaching the maximum or going beyond would not be advised unless someone is benching with sub-zero cooling for some time under 24 hours.
IOH Core Voltage- Different than IOH PLL, and more important! This observation will be explained later. The catcher.
ICH Core Voltage- Not important.
Core pll- Signal strength of the CPU. At higher core voltages/frequencies the Core pll can be reduced below spec to enhance stability.
IOH pll- Think of this like the catcher's pitching strength. The catcher (IOH) needs to catch, not pitch so much.
QPI pll- The pitcher's pitch! When you are reaching (within .5GHz) the physical limit of the QPI clock for your chip this is usually a culprit for stability. At a max of 1.5V (DON'T GO HIGHER) some stubborn chips and boards can reach high BCLK OCs. The IOH Core Voltage needs to be = to the QPI pll voltage for best results. The two voltages should be the same at stock 1.1V or something like that. If they are not the same then do not change them because your bios probably has them named differently.
CPU pll- This voltage is overlooked for 45nm chips mostly because it is not an issue when overclocking. For 32nm chips the maximum voltage is 2V, and slight increases above the automatic setting of 1.8V may increase stability.
