...and just realised my RAM is running at 533mhz. Must have put the multiplier down when I was testing 210. Will sort that and try again in case it makes any difference.

OK so I just ran it with my rig. 3970x @ 4.7ghz with two Titan Black running EVGA SC bios. These are at stock, I know they overclock well. Results -

Score - 18639

Graphics score - 23583

Physics score - 16719

Combined score - 7767

So I think it's quite honestly safe to say that a hex core Xeon on X58 is more than man enough to game with, running modern cards in SLI.

Personally I would spend on GPUs, not a CPU upgrade.

Very interesting indeed!

I had a 920 @ 4.2ghz and SLI 670s. I was very (very!) close to buying a 4790K rig and then stumbled on this thread by accident. Decided instead to try the Xeon, when it worked I sold the 670s and put the new rig cash in to buy the 970s.

Nearly went completely **** up when I managed to bend a CPU pin but fortunately it bent back okay. Definitely the right choice :)

Very impressive how the clocked 970s are performing as well actually. What did a pair of Titan Black's run you, £1,800?

My rig does more, but, this is my day to day set up so I'm not going to cheat to make the Xeon look bad. I can get 4.9ghz bench stable and my Titans allow me to score over 20k but this is how I run it in game and so on.

TBH? I'm actually quite blown away by how close that Xeon can run me. I mean obviously my scores are higher, but, the graphics score doesn't seem to be held back in any way.

Very nice rig mate but yeah, in the performance per pound stakes both the Xeon and the 970s are really quite something.

I can get 4.6ghz bench stable but the voltage scares me. 4.5ghz is IBT stable though. Suspect I'll settle at 4.4ghz to prolong its life a bit though.

Theres no such thing as qpi on z8/97 but you have cache clock. Possibly the same thing. Found it to help in benchmarks.

Very impressive FS score Ste, physics is quite a bit higher than what I get on a 4.7ghz 4790k.

I have a 5670, but never got round to selling the 920.

Thanks RE: Firestrike - quite pleased with that.

RE: QPI I hear that speeding the link up will have a positive impact on Cinebench. What does it support? I think most people have been running the QPI at x36 as a default, the next step up on my board is something like x44 which would probably be a big step up...

Let us know how you get on!

Yeah it's a pretty big jump. Still, if an i7-920 rated for 4.8 GT/s can handle 7.2 GT/s, I suppose it's possible that an X5650 rated for 6.4 GT/s can handle 9.6 GT/s. I'm gonna guess it can't though.

I'm a little late to the party, but there seem to be plenty of Xeons still available! What's the general consensus on which model to get? Is it worth spending extra money on anything above a x5650?

From my understanding it's down to the motherboard... if the board can handle a high bclock then you will be fine with the 5650, if it won't then you will need the higher multiplier from the more expensive chips. But it's worth looking around for a better chip for a similar amount, if you're lucky you'll get one.

5650 and 5660 are listed as the best clockers, there is only x1 difference but the 5660 is double the price of the 5650. And with it all been down to the board your using and the base clock the CPU can do get as cheap a chip as you can as you may end up going through a few of them. Friend had a few that wold max at 175ish but the lucky bugger just got one that will do 218x21
