1366 X58 Xeon 5650

I've done some range finding and I'm feeling like an upgrade is coming! My i7-920 will do 3.4GHz (20x170) on stock voltage, and I don't have time to tweak settings right now, so I kept 3.4 as my ceiling...

17x200 - IBT Pass
16x205 - Pass
16x208 - Pass
16x210 - Fail

So I am optimistic that I should be able to run a x5650 at 4-4.1GHz on this mobo. I assume the boost will take this to 22x200 = 4.4GHz... this has to be hitting the limit on air. Are people having issues with the boost, or is it best to disable?

I have it disabled but have access to higher multipliers.

Even 4 or 4.2 would be a very nice way of spending 50 quid though. I booted mine at stock and it felt noticeably smoother in windows than the i7 did at 4.2!

These chips seem to take voltage without getting too much hotter. 4.5 at 1.375 was my air limit with hottest core at 80 and average being about 76-77. Noctua D14.

What's the point of all this OverClocking.... ;) ....... my 400 quid Hp Z600 arrived....

Bargain horsepower, hassle free and rock solid all day.... chuffed. :D

Very nice indeed!

Makes me realise how significant the overclocking gains are though to see mine at 1030 ish! From what I assume must be 650 or so at stock.

What's the point of all this OverClocking.... ;) ....... my 400 quid Hp Z600 arrived.... threw in a graphics card, old SSD with an old W7 install, let it sort it's life out on boot and install what it needed and run Maxon.....

Interesting rig :)

gets the same as a 5820K clocked to 4.5 ish ghz....

Nice! I was thinking about replacing my dual socket (771) Dell with one of those. But I dont need to really... :p

I think i'm gonna give it a little while, see what Skylake (locked) benchmarks are like compared to current chips, then decide if it's worth waiting for the k chips next year based on that. Should know whether it's worth waiting for or going x99 by then too.

Anyone know if Cannonlake will be compatible with the same chipset that Skylake uses?

I've got the chance of getting a brand new boxed 5820k at staff discount off a mate for 269inc not a huge saving but after selling my xeon about 210ish....I just don't get why I'm so trepid leaving my xeon :p :o

That's the reason i'm also hesitant, it may be what 40%? stronger overall, but apart from video encoding and stuff like that i bet you'd not even notice the difference for most other things.
Sounds about right, the CPU world is nothing like it was a decade ago where Celeron was a dirty word and a mild CPU overclock made a noticeable difference to user experience. Aside from games, which are largely GPU-bound, hardware has outpaced everyday software fairly significantly. AMD and SSDs deserve a lot of credit for that.

If I played some high-end modern games I'd have considered upgrading to Ivy Bridge or Haswell but since my PC easily handles all of the games I throw at it, there just isn't any point. Some of the new instruction sets are nice but still niche in terms of their uses. Clock speeds rose after Nehalem but not hugely. Back in the day the clock speeds would increase alongside IPC improvements but that doesn't really happen any more. The IPC improvement across three generations is ~30% depending on the type of workload and clock rates have risen 15-20%, totalling maybe a 50% improvement per core by replacing the entire PC core. Or you could just increase your core count by 50% by buying a Xeon X5650. :D

Do you get any cpu based performance problems with games? I only change chip when it cant do the thinkgs i need it to.

Ive done it

5930K and X99 mobo...Got a great deal on MM

X58...its been emotional.:(

So how much have you laid out then mate for your X99 setup.

EDIT: just seen the deal in MM, well that's a good price for that lot. Done well.
Only problem is warranty buying second hand if it goes up in smoke your not covered. Sure you'll be fine though. My gigabyte board is going strong 6 years on.

Seem's odd he was selling that lot as it's so new. . Maybe it only overclocks to 4Ghz?! :p

Noticed you went for a 5930K which I know is a bit more expensive, but to be honest it's the cpu I would/will go for.

I'll be quite interested in your thoughts about X99.

:)
