1366 X58 Xeon 5650

So how much have you laid out then mate for your X99 setup.

EDIT: just seen the deal in MM, well that's a good price for that lot. Done well.
Only problem is warranty buying second hand if it goes up in smoke your not covered. Sure you'll be fine though. My gigabyte board is going strong 6 years on.

Seem's odd he was selling that lot as it's so new?

Noticed you went for a 5930K which I know is a bit more expensive, but to be honest it's the cpu I would/will go for.

I'll be quite interested in your thoughts about X99.

:)

Many of the people who bought X99 won't have it very long. It's a common thing.. Something new comes out, gotta have it, will improve my life etc, then the penny drops and they come back to reality and sell it on and replace it with a normal sort of set up.

The amount of times I've seen Boom humming and harring over whether to sell his.

The actual amount of people who sit down and weigh things up and buy the actual rig they need is far lower. X99 is basically a cheap way to build a professional workstation without paying Xeon money. That's its sole purpose yet people buy it to run benchmarks and games on.

When I spent three grand on my rig I knew it was a very long term investment. I sit here every day fully expecting it to go for five years or so without me even needing to do anything but blow the dust out of it once in a while (usually every month or so).

But I didn't buy mine for gaming. I bought it so I can do what I love and that's coding front ends for an emulator my friend wrote. I sometimes go for months without doing it, but, I always go back and when I do I find the extra power makes things much easier for me.

X99 is a very big investment but, can actually work out cheaper in the long run that either buying a new rig every year or so or spending £500 every year or so on upgrades. You just need a big old pot of anti itch cream and it's worth the investment :D

Same goes for my Titan Blacks. They were a hell of a lot cheaper than Teslas !

Then X99 and things like the Titan are a great way for you to get a professional workstation without dumping two grand on a CPU up to the task :)

I got some good deals..

Basically

£350 5930K
£100 X99 Gaming 5
£150 DDR 4 Corsair 2800mhz

Total £600

I'm happy with the cost of the upgrade...Sold my MOBO already and 6GB ram

So I reckon after I sell the rest.. Chip, soundcard...I'm looking at around £345 for my new PC :)

:)

£600 is good. I could have done my set up for that but chose to pay an £80 premium for Dom Plats. IIRC the total for my board CPU and ram was around £650.

Might consider doing the same, but maybe only for the ram.. i usually never buy used hardware.
I never bought used hardware until about a year ago. My GPU blew up and I wanted an AMD replacement (to spite nVidia's decision to not fix a crash affecting all of their DX10 cards in Source engine games) but the choice was either paying more than I wanted to, or buying old tech. So I went used instead and I'm glad I did.

Aside from the i7-920 a few days ago, I haven't sold any hardware before either. I usually use gear for so long that it has no resale value. I do have a spare laptop kicking around though, which I may sell before it becomes really obsolete. It's a Core i5, which as a name carries weight in the market, but it's literally the worst one (i5-430m, the slowest Arrandale/Westmere chip). :p

I've just jumped on the Xeon 5650 bandwagon too, got it running at 4.4 (220 x20). Has anyone experimented with the different multis much regarding which one would offer the higher possible clocks? Just curious if i could get a bit more out of it or if i should just be happy with what i have.

Interesting rig :)

gets the same as a 5820K clocked to 4.5 ish ghz....

It's actually to do a real job ;) I use CAD and it comes with Keyshot5 which is rendering and 3D animation software for CAD data... so more threads the better.
Just need to stop looking at X5690's on auction site.... 0ver 500 quid for pair

You may as well set the multiplier as high as you can so you can reduce BCLK to avoid strain on other components.

From what I have heard multipliers with Odd numbers requires less voltages. so you could try 19 or 21.
