1366 X58 Xeon 5650

6gb is fine for most normal uses, find 8gb limiting on my laptop for some cad work i do, so will be upping that to 16gb when i can be bothered. Server likes to have more too, but thats simply due to whats running on it.

My advice, check your usage, and see how much you are using, if its hitting 80%+ regularly, upgrade.

Nope it was just with Dying Light the other day. I think it was just an issue with me trying unsuccessfully to get Crossfire to work. Disabled it because it's not supported and RAM usage at a respectable 6GB now.

To be fair to P4Clock, it sounds like you did have a problem with your system on that occasion, that being the Crossfire setup.

so yours saying i was right there was a problem???, also CF dose not make your system use more memory there may be a driver problem.

What temps are people getting?

BF4 @ 4.2(4.4 turbo), i hit a massive 65-70. and lets not forget the xeon's top out at 102c(shutdown point) unlike desktop chips 90c.
i am not 100% but i think the throttle point is 81.3c if i am reading the intel site right

Cheers. Mines at 4ghz and I have a Corsair H50 and i'm getting

Idle : 55'c
Full load max temp : 73'c ( 3Dmark11 cpu test )

that seems a bit hot. I'm running mine (X5670) at 3.8ghz on a H50 and getting 35 idle, 65 load.

I get around 65'c while gaming but when on 3dmark11 CPU test it crept upto 73'c for a few seconds before dropping down again. When i'm home today i'm going to try lowering the Vcore and see if i can get it any lower.

is CPU-Z and CPUID HWMonitor acruate for VCore? As mine is running at : Min = 1.264 Max = 1.296

It seem temps are not too important, as my stock X5650's in a Z600 HP workstation with stock cooling is allowed to run at 80c at max load (mixed Prime)... The Fans auto regulate and hold it at 80.... Will be interesting to see what the X5690's do... :o
Idle/light load is silent around 30-40c

Hi guys. This is a very interesting thread. I was thinking to buy one of these 6 cores xeons, but the 1366 motherboards are really expensive on ebay and since I want to build a system from scratch I think I will go for a more recent hardware, unless I find a really good deal.
But I have a question and maybe someone can answer: have you tried to run windows 10 in one of these motherboards? If yes, it worked fine or you had some BSOD?
Microsoft recently said that the new DX12 will be available only on Win 10 and since I would use the pc also for gaming I was interested to know if the new OS can work on such old motherboards.

Xeon upgrades only come into value if you already own an x58 mobo...

You might aswell get newer hardware IMO...unless you can pick up an x58 mobo for less than 50 which is not going to happen

Nope.

Motherboard £100 GA-EX-UD5
CPU £47 5650 dose 4.4 with the board

in CPU tasks its about 40 to 60% better then my 1150 i5-4670(none K)

An ok Board for overclocking on 1150 lets say £100?
i5 4670K are selling at £125 used

mmm £78 more and i cant see the over clock making up for the 2 extra cores of the 6 extra threads. should we go i7? used £200, mmm now we are £178 over the x58 budget.

All new tech brings to the table is
USB3(never used it)
Sata3 i have raid SSD's so SATA2 or 3 as no difference in feel
pcie3 2x the band with of pcie2, z97 sli 8x 8x... x58 sli 16x 16x so x2 the band with is lost there then?

i am not saying x58 is the best choice but i cant see a reason not to get it.

do you have a reason?

Installed my x5670 last night and got it stable at 22x194 1.35v. Fails Prime at 195+. Gets up to 82c when running
Prime so I don't really want to push the voltage higher. I used Gelid gc-extreme and don't think I applied it very well so may redo it.

Anyway, could anyone enlighten me on what qpi/pll is? I have them on auto at the moment.

Thanks.

if it fails prime at MAX vcore 1.35 drop you clock a little.
is your ram set to 1.65v, and @ 1600mhz or lower? if not try that.

82 on air?? is fine the xeon's top out at 102c(well not fine but not bad)

And lastly in the world of 8pack dont use prime it garbage. he told me just use the system if it stable your golden, i had a system prime stable for 2hr's but would crash in firefox.

i used:
3dmark
Pi
LinX

82 °C in winter isn't great though. You want about 15 °C headroom for summer (+10 °C for ambient, +5 °C for dust reducing the efficiency of your cooler).

It would work I'm guessing...

How's the X99 going Easy now you've had a little while to play with it. . .

Pleased you upgraded and can you definitely feel a nice boost in every day tasks?

I've got nice set of set of Kingston Predator 16GB DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz sitting here ready and got it for a good price too.

Just need the 5930K and Gigabyte X99-Gaming 7 mobo to complete the change. I'll be getting that new. All will be happening next month!

Be interested in your thoughts mate.

:)
