1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Nope.

Motherboard £100 GA-EX-UD5
CPU £47 5650 dose 4.4 with the board

in CPU tasks its about 40 to 60% better then my 1150 i5-4670(none K)

An ok Board for overclocking on 1150 lets say £100?
i5 4670K are selling at £125 used

mmm £78 more and i cant see the over clock making up for the 2 extra cores of the 6 extra threads. should we go i7? used £200, mmm now we are £178 over the x58 budget.

All new tech brings to the table is
USB3(never used it)
Sata3 i have raid SSD's so SATA2 or 3 as no difference in feel
pcie3 2x the band with of pcie2, z97 sli 8x 8x... x58 sli 16x 16x so x2 the band with is lost there then?

i am not saying x58 is the best choice but i cant see a reason not to get it.

do you have a reason?

You can pick up last gen Intel stuff and clock it...sata 3 is quicker and I've noticed a big boost using the same drive...your using raid but not everyone will ..and this adds to the cost to achieve 580mb plus read speeds...

I'm not saying that xeon 5650 doesn't hold its own...but buying into 6 year old tech for the purpose of a new build is not wise IMO....

Not all 5650 will do 4.4 ghz either on volts that people can use 24/7 so this is a sweeping statement.

4.5ghz 1.375v cpuz (1.40625 BIOS) and I get to 81 on the hottest core and mid 70s as an average across all cores.

Air cooled D14

Edit - IBT after 10 passes.

In Crysis 3 I can hit a max of 60 but my 970s raise the case temps by a huge amount which probably makes that worse :)

he as to be using a bad cooler or its not fitted right

Yes, I think the thermal paste was applied quite badly. First time I've tried the Gelid GC-Extreme and it was like putty and did not spread well. I read somewhere that it needs warming up first, so I might try that.

Using a Prolimatech Megahalems with 2x120mm fans - it's been cooling my i7 920 @ 4GHz for years at low 70s during Prime.

How's the X99 going Easy now you've had a little while to play with it. . .

Pleased you upgraded and can you definitely feel a nice boost in every day tasks?

I've got nice set of set of Kingston Predator 16GB DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz sitting here ready and got it for a good price too.

Just need the 5930K and Gigabyte X99-Gaming 7 mobo to complete the change. I'll be getting that new. All will be happening next month!

Be interested in your thoughts mate.

:)

It's great...noticed big gains in video editing and encoding and my min frame rates are higher in games....I'm pleased with the upgrade....
For the outlay I'm set for the new tech and m.2 stuff and my samsung evo is working like it should....

its nice to have a new rig and new hardware to play with....YOLO :D

Small-pea-sized blob (think petit pois) in the centre always works for me. I thought I put a tad too much on when installing my Xeon but the temps are great so I guess not.

Well it's official.

All X99 parts now bought! :D

X58 goodbye old friend, you shall not be forgotten. Served me exceptionally well for the last 6 years and could last another 6 easy. You are a true legend.

I'm upgrading not out of need, just something new to play with.

New rig will consist of:
Intel 5820K
Gigabyte GA-X99-Gaming G1
16GB Kingston Predator DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz

:)

You'll not find many sensible or sane people willing to spend £150 on 6 year old hardware with zero warranty. Not to mention it's a dead end platform with old and redundant technologies.

You went for the 5820k ?

Yes mate, no point paying a premium for something that I wont be using (extra lanes).

I have no need for 4x gfx cards :p

5820K should overclock the same as the 5830K. So that's good enough for me. Plus I like the bang for buck it presents. ;)

Also with Broadwell-E (the next cpu for X99) coming up I might not have my 5820K for that long anyway. Depends if its worth changing or not I guess.

Yeah forgot I only paid 350 for my 5930k makes sense if buying new...doesn't it hinder storage on the PCI empress lanes though if two gfx cards are installed ?

My mobo is only 4 years old.

Congratulations.

Still doesn't change the fact that x58 is over 6 years old. Some of the motherboards are newer, 4 years in your case, though any warranty is still null and void, same for the CPU's.

My point still stands, no sane person would spend £150-£200 on X58 (motherboard and cpu) today, considering there is no warranty at all.

Of course if you already have the motherboard, upgrading to a 6 core xeon from a 920 will buy you time and is a good deal for some on a limited budget (provided they don't spend more than £50 on the xeon), or those who do have the budget for something new but do not appreciate Z97/x99 for whatever reason.

Ok, no need for sarcasm. I wasnt actually commenting on the warranty issue. I'm not really sure how relevent that is to be honest. Warranty aside, its still a lot of power for the age/money.

As far as I can tell 28 lanes is fine for 2x gfx cards and using the M.2.

I'll be using my Samsung 850 pro anyway. Everything else is on the NAS.

So no problem for me as I'll never use more than two cards, if anything I want to go back to a single card solution. With the 390X coming up it could well be possible if it's as powerful as they are making out it should handle 1440p max eye candy no problemo (fingers crossed).
Until then my 7970's will do the job fine.

;)

who would agree the x58 is the best platform ever made ?

I've used loads x79, x48, x38, z77, z68,p67 and older 775's and none have matched the sustainability of this platform

have you tried to run windows 10 in one of these motherboards? If yes, it worked fine or you had some BSOD?
Microsoft recently said that the new DX12 will be available only on Win 10 and since I would use the pc also for gaming I was interested to know if the new OS can work on such old motherboards.

I have not run it natively but I am running it in a VM on my X58, kind of a step in the right direction but the hardware virtualisation might be masking some issues. I can't see how microsoft would not fix this if it was a problem, there is a lot more legacy kit they will have to support.
