1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Bought an X5660 for £85 after seeing this thread. Haven't OC'd since I set up my 920 D0 years ago and was still able to get this running at 4GHz (4.2 Turbo) within 40 minutes despite not really having that much of clue.

Can't get BCLK past 175 (had the same issue with my i7) - my RAM is pretty poor though.

Temps just touch 50c with Intel Burntest (I bought a Nepton 280L to go with it). I'm tempted to buy better RAM now, but I'm not sure how much higher I can get it to go and whether it's worth it.

Thanks to the community for this - i was about to ditch my X58 setup!

What speed is your RAM running at? Mine is 1333MHz stock but has to run at 1208MHz when the multiplier is at 22. It was unstable running at 1600MHz. Next thing is for me to tighten the timings seeing as its running at a lower speed.

Forgot to link my new card to my PayPal account, so PayPal have gone ahead and used an eCheque to pay the seller, which will take 7 - 9 days. They didn't even prompt me to link a new card before doing this...

So my CPU is at least 10 days away

Oh, the agony of that wait!! :)

According to CPUZ the RAM is running at 1066. 3 of my DIMMs are 1066 and the other 3 are 1600.

I probably should ditch these 6x2GB are get 3x4GB.

I'm just about to install a X5675 to upgrade my rig tomorrow.

CPU arrived today, but i'm just waiting for some new TIM (MX-2) and 2 new fans for my heat sink.

I spent some ££'s on 2 "Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm Focused Flow" fans for their higher static pressure stats and the fact they are PWM. Always bugged me that I didn't have the current fans on the heat sink using the PWM off the motherboard.

I've never really bothered with much overclocking before so I may be looking for some advice and guidance. Worst case is I just run the X5675 at stock and I''ll have lower temps, a few extra Mhzs over my i950, more memory bandwidth and 50% extra cores too boot! :)

How much did you pay?

I got the CPU for £135 including delivery and it has a 60 day return window. It is a bit pricey compared to the ~£70 X5650's that are available.

I'm still really pleased with the prospect of giving my X58 an upgrade for <£200 (including the 2 new heat sink fans) which should get me another 2+ years before I need to upgrade. Most likely i'll get a nice new rig some time late next year anyhow.

This thread is very interesting as also have an X58/i7 950 setup running in a HTPC case

Been itching to upgrade and have so far bypassed Z87/Z97 and Haswell and also been considering X99/Haswell-E, but a big part of me saying wait for Skylake

So these run cooler than the i7 9xx's then? as that is my only real issue as using a HTPC case and a Noctua NH9 cooler, as would like to overclock to around 4Ghz

Current i7 system is running at 3.6Ghz and idles around 45 degrees

I'm kind of in a similar situation. What does Skylake offer over and above the up and coming x99 setups? I'm tempted to go for a Xeon hex core to tie me over until then.

As far as i know, Skylake is a new architecture on 14nm

Broadwell will be next for the mainstream platform (Z97) in 2015 and i suspect Broadwell-E will come some point next year and be for X99

As i understand things Haswell/Broadwell are the same arhitecture, but Broadwell has a die shrink so should run cooler and consume less power

Just ordered a 5650 for £52 from a UK seller, didn't really need it at the moment but I might have some rendering tasks in the next few months that would benefit from it, and a cooler idle would be good.

I've upated my benches to include the 5670 that I bought and clocked to 4.4Ghz. Performance wise, its not a great leap over the 5650 @ 4GHz and I'm not sure it justifies the extra money but they're both great CPU's and compare very well to the 4770k @ 4.4Ghz.
