Having been on the receiving end of this last Saturday having to wait 5 hours in the operation stack detour, which was made worse by some massive military vehicle show going in Kent at the time; I would say things are really starting to heat up now and I really don't see it getting better. One we finally arrived at the tunnel all we did was show our tickets and we we waived through the French passport control in Dover. That's where the problem Los for me. There is only a small check before going on the train and once you get to the other side it is just straight on the motorway and bye bye. The Frech authorities were pretty much non existent and I think they feel it is not their problem as they don't have to suffer from the consequences of it.

From a French facebook page:

Just read on la Voix du Nord that strikers from the MyFerryLink SCOP have put barricades of burning tyres on the rocade portuaire blocking it in both directions. This follows a decision issued this morning to put the SCOP into forced judicial liquidation i.e. bankruptcy. This could get worse as some of the strikers have warned on social media that if this happens they will scuttle the Berlioz and the Rodin in the harbour mouth.

If they sink these ships Operation Stack will be back up to Birmingham.

150 a week (that they have caught) mounts up to thousands a year. It's a disaster really, and a security nightmare. A perfect way for potential terrorists to get in to the country.
Hey lets let them in with open arms though, what could possibly go wrong.

but we keep getting told that immigrants are a net gain for the economy so surely greece should be taking all of them to get itself back on track?

probably is a net personal gain if your near the top of the business chain.

probably 20% of the population is better off.

rest burden the cost

I don't know why they're not arresting some of these trade union types...

tis one thing to go slow on motorways or try to peacefully blockade stuff - but setting fires and spraying cars with much as per the farmers...

one union leader even quoted as saying he'd start a fire at the channle tunnel again....

if you changed that from 'tunnel' to 'airport' and you tried setting a big fire you'd likely be behind bars...

why on earth are the french so hesitant to arrest these scumbags

Every refugee has duties to the country in which he finds himself, which require in particular that he conform to its laws and regulations as well as to measures taken for the maintenance of public order

breaking fences counts as doing that does it?

oh and yes it does here

refugees unlawfully in the country of refugee
1.
The Contracting States shall not impose penalties, on account of their illegal entry or presence, on refugees who, coming directly from a territory where their life or freedom was threatened in the sense of article 1, enter or are present in their territory without authorization, provided they present themselves without delay to the authorities and show good cause for their illegal entry or presence.

these people are not coming directly

article 31

If they've made it to Europe from Africa by boat, couldn't they just float their way across the channel?

That's exactly what they will start doing if we clamped down at the ports and tunnel etc and you'd find then the royal navy and life boats picking up the burden of fishing them out of the sea, while the armchair warriors suggest just letting them drown etc.

Again apart from significantly changing our policies towards them here and beefing up security we really need to actually find some global solution that brings their home nations up to a suitable standard where these people aren't tempted to come and mooch of our systems, they can mooch of their own.
