2008 British Grand Prix - Race 9/17

Are some of you guys test drivers in Formula One? You all seem to know a lot about setting up the car, what causes what, where the drivers are going wrong...

It's basic driving. No details in that. if you spin it's because you are driving the car to hard and going over the limit. That is regardless of any setup.

I realise I shall make some heads explode when I say this, but frankly I've got no problem with inducing cranial trauma in most people....so here goes:

Ferrari were rubbish, Kovy was disappointing, and Lewis Hamilton fully deserves that win.

Further thoughts:

1) Seriously - Ferrari were awful. Even leaving aside the strategic gaffe with KR's tyres, what in the hell was wrong with both those cars today? Massa looked like his car was completely undrivable, and Kimi wasn't much better off. Whether it was setup, or just an inherent issue in the design....either way, bad run for them.
2) Webber seems to have got his poor luck back. Bother :(
3) Given the amount of research into water-shedding road surfaces, and given that according to certain people on this forum Silverstone is a great track, how come there were still very, very large puddles right up until the end of the race on the racing line in places? I mean, come on - There is no way the track surface should have been as bad as it was right at the end. Hamilton was having to cruise through with no throttle applied just to make sure he'd stay on the track. If anything should convince folks that the GP shouldn't be there, this was it.
4) On a similar note - all that bull**** on the ITV commentary about this being a great race. Was it ****. It was a God damned lottery, thanks to the British weather allied to a rubbish track.
5) Honda and Rubens. I should just like to say this to all those who have said Rubens was past it:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Eat that. Proof that you can retain talent even in a poor car. It might not happen again all year, but at least it happened this once.
6) I had to laugh at the sychronised spin for DC at that Torro Rosso early on. There's just something pleasingly comical about seeing two cars go off like that.
7) For some reason, the advert breaks irritated me even more today than usual. Roll on '09 and the BBC coverage.
8) And again, on a similar note - the ITV commentary today. Even Brundle was crap in places. JA was just.....JA, but worse on account of Lewis having a good day. Ted was his usual JA-clone self. If I'd had a radio nearby I might have muted the TV and stuck the Five Live coverage on.

That is not what I mean and you know it...

setup affects lap times
setup does not affect spins as you should find the limit and stay within it.

Massa lost quite a bit of set up time on Friday due to sliding out on Alonso's oil spill. He had been struggling ever since and no doubt had a poor set up for the race. He was a long way behind Kimi in qualifying in the dry and that does not normally happen. Just because he did not blame the car in his interview does not mean there was nothing wrong with the car. A lot of drivers don't like blaming the car or the team when things don't go to plan.

Screw itv commentary, come watch tim henman talk about wimbledon. Soo bored i might just go paint a wall and watch it dry, then paint it again a few more times.

yes, and As I sad that explains the poor lap times. It does not excuse so many spins.

I'm not sure how you can call it a lottery at all really - the winner stayed on the same tyres as most other people and if he had gone onto wets it would have been even more of a whitewash. A lottery is when you go from dry to a sudden downpour and then there is a safety car or something. A fairly sensible non risky strategy won the race by over a minute today.

Hmmmm, not sure I believe any of the above. I think to discount setup 'regardless' is a little nieve.

But then I'm happy to admit I have no experience of driving an F1 car, so wouldnt like to pretend I know.

Errr, no it was.

Im not a hardcore F1 watcher, just casually watch it while at work.

It *was* a good race, entertaining whilst nail biting and entertainment as people were all over the shop.

Dry track racing is poor and boring because everyone is staying on the track and its utterly, utterly, boring.

The weather made the race better and the standing water, who gives a ****! It makes it harder for the drivers and team to drive and setup correctly to deal with it.

Sunny and dry and perfect is boring and easy!

Superb race (especially in terms of the championship). Very glad Barrichello brought some home a shed load of points. It is races like these which Honda need to capitalise on. I thought Button was going to join him up there but he's making too many mistakes this season.

Seem to have contradicted yourself a bit there JRS.

Amazing drive from Hamilton, he makes mistakes sometimes but then he comes out with a drive like that, the stage where the track was stupidly wet and he was miles ahead of the other intermediate runner's just showed a supreme ability imo :)

Kovy was dissapointing, I rate him as a driver and he's undeniably quick on a single lap but he definately needs improvement in the races, but we'll see, maybe it'll come, he won't be up in the level of schumacher et al, but I think he could be up with Raikkonen/Kubica/Heidfeld, people who (imo) are good enough to win races, and maybe the odd championship, but won't dominate in the way schumacher did...

And Massa, nice to see the improvement that JRS was talking about before the race :p

More seriously it might've been partially down to the car, or the setup, but there's no real excuse for that many spins surely...

Probably due to the loss of driver aids and in particular, traction control.

I'm sure everything i've read about Button and his use of TC in previous years said he used very little in comparison with people like Massa and as such should benefit from the ban.

Kovy was disappointing,

Well. Hello. Havent I been saying this all season long? My only amazement is that you havent come out with an excuse for his poor performance today.

This was Heikki's strongest race track and he got beat by a Honda and lapped by his team mate.

He doesnt deserve to be in a McLaren.

I can quite easily call it a lottery. Look, I'll do it again:

It was a lottery.

See?

Cars were falling off left, right and bloody centre, how can it not be a lottery???

It certainly produced moments of excitement. Rainy races always do. But they don't always mean a good race. 1993 at Donny was a good race. 1996 at Barcelona was a good race. 1997 at Monaco was a good race. This, while fun to watch in places....just wasn't what I'd call vintage Grand Prix racing.

Dry track racing is poor and boring because everyone is staying on the track and its utterly, utterly, boring.

Not always, but I'd agree with the sentiment that wet weather can liven things up a touch.

The weather made the race better and the standing water, who gives a ****!

I do, if I'm honest. The BRDC claim that Silverstone is a world class racing venue, and yet it can't shed a bit of water. And plenty of people moan when it rains at Interlagos and you end up with standing water everywhere.

Oh, sorry....but this is Silverstone. LOLOLOL SILVERSTONE IS AWESOME AND NOTHING COULD EVER IMPROVE IT LOLOLOL.

It makes it harder for the drivers and team to drive and setup correctly to deal with it.

Not going to dispute that, since it is rather stating the bleeding obvious.

Sunny and dry and perfect is boring and easy!

Will dispute that one, though.

Again - dry weather does not automatically mean poor race. By the same token, wet weather does not automatically mean great race. If it did, they'd hose the tracks down before the start of every GP....

That does strike a chord with me as Im sure quite a few times the commentators have said when you are onboard with Button you can hear that the TC doesnt engage as much as if you were onboard with Massa...

He hasnt got an aggressive style, but whatever hes doing, he hasnt got the advantages we expected him to get with the rule changes...

ps3ud0
