2008 Japanese GP - Race 16/18

Hi all I just watched the race and I thought it was very exciting. We had a lot of overtaking for once so Fuji has gone up in my rankings! I thought the Kubica and Kimi battle was particularly exciting. I feel sad for Hekki and his bad luck and also hope DC can get a good result before he retires. Good win for Alonso again how far does that move him up in the championship. My thoughts on the silly penalties.

Lap 1 T1, Kimi, Hekki and Lewis: Lewis hung Kimi out fair and square in my opinion and did not deserver a penalty for this. It was like a strong touring car move. Hekki I thought forced Kimi off even more than really necessary. Lewis then went really wide around on the run off edge to maintain speed and position, for this I think he did deserve the penalty. Stewards imo applied it for the wrong infraction

Lap 1, Massa and Lewis: Massa penalty no question. Lewis was past and Massa was pretty much off track before running into the side of the McLaren.

Bourdais and Massa: Bourdais had the line, didn't out brake himself and Massa spun out, no penalty needed really.

Massa passing Webber: Stupid and unnecessary to go in that close to the wall / across the no go area and across the pit lane exit. I am sure he was on the red/white area totally. I'm glad no body was exiting the pit lane. Massa had the pace he could easily passed him around the outside or possible else where but he was too much in a hurry. I think that this was gaining an advantage of being off track again. EDIT thatching on the motorway is no go, or do not drive on, and on the track was across the white line!

Lewis was slow for whatever reason and it is a shame, I hope he does not crack up like last year. We have to remember he is still the top Brit this year and still only in his second year of F1. I almost think he may have been better off going the normal route to F1 through some of the other teams away from the spotlight. I think he is still learning and will come back next year even faster!

My own personal view is that these drive through penalties are getting ridiculous. I feel that Hamilton, nor Massa deserved any punishment. By handing out penalties, it will prevent drivers from overtaking and taking risks.

Exactly my thoughts. If you're going to be penalised from brushing wheels with someone, unintentionally causing them to spin and lose 4-5 seconds, then what's the point in racing?

It needs looking at. For once James Allen was right saying it was becoming a "nanny state".

I would agree its over the top now every little incident is investigated let them be grown up and sort it out on the track Lewis would have learned a lesson today that he cant bully Massa no more and that would have been taken on board by him. Just as Lewis has put his mark on other drivers, Senna and Schumacher did it to great effect they could almost scare another driver out of the way cause they knew they would come through and not care if they end your race.

Personally James Allen has a lot to answer for, with his constant bleating for penalties which people just accept as being right, look at this thread, people all over Massa overtaking Webber, wanting it looked into, its really reaching a new low.

James Allen.

For all this time, Ive not made a single negative comment about James Allen, however, this race weekend he has really got on my nerves.

First of all he made out as if Hamilton's pole was the best pole the world has ever seen - definitely not the case.

Then, during the race, he was claiming that even though Kimi was in 3rd and was being dropped by Alonso, apparently, by some wonder, Kimi was in prime position to win the race, with Alonso (apparently), realistically, hoping for only a podium. I was thinking, "Has this man gone mad?"

Has he forgotten that Kimi is a shadow of his former self? Has he forgotten that Alonso has won more championships, races and points than anybody else currently in F1? Did he fail to notice that Alonso was opening a gap?

Kimi does come strong in the latter part of the race, but by then, invariably, its too late, especially when you consider that overtaking an equally fast car is nigh on impossible in F1 these days. I am totally bemused by Ferrari's decision to re-sign Kimi.

It was great to see Alonso back to winning ways and totally justifies my belief that he is the best driver currently in F1. JRS seems to disagree with me, yet he hasnt put forward his nomination for F1's current "daddy". ;)

Actually, it was Brundle who said that.

James Allen, true to form, stated that Massa's overtaking manouvre on Webber needed to be looked at, as Massa was forced off the track, by Webber, to which JA inferred that perhaps Massa should be punished for it. I was thinking, "So JA, you feel that perhaps Massa should've kept his car on the track, even though Webber would've been on top of Massa's car, had he not taken the evasive manouvre?"

What the hell was Massa supposed to do? If anything Webber is the one who should be punished. Thankfully, nobody did, as that was a great overtaking manouvre from Massa and great defending from Webber.

His bias towards Hamilton (and against Massa), is getting ridiculous.

The sooner JA goes, the better.

Ferrari must be mad if they have not snapped up Alonso, they could easily be dominant like they were with Schumacher with him at the helm, the way he has turned Renault around this season is a testimony to his ability, he drove the wheels of that car all season long even when it was a dog, and as soon as he got it to even close to having race winning pace he is on it. Renault should be very strong next year I would not rule out Alonso taking the title next season with the new regs going to play right into his hands.

Well said that man. Spot on.

Sorry man, but I disagree. Webber was pushing Massa off the track. Massa had 2 options: move off the track and proceed with the overtaking manouvre OR back off, slipstream behind Webber then try and overtake Webber from the other side. I would've done exactly what Massa did. If anyone was being stupid, it was Webber, who forced Massa right off (legal) the track.

I think he [Hamilton] is still learning and will come back next year even faster!

I doubt he will be any faster in the next few years than he is now. He has the basic flat speed already. In fact, he is probably the outright fastest driver in F1. Remember though, fastest driver in F1 is not the same as the best driver in F1. You have to know when to back off and right now Hamilton has only 2 settings: full speed and no speed. He must learn to play the percentage game, just like we've seen Alonso do in the past. Kubica is very good in this area, where he never overdrives. This is why we hardly ever see Kubica make mistakes, yet he always seems to get the most out of the car.

I don't know why but I really, really like Kubica. My favorite driver in F1 by a mile nowerdays :)

Exactly.

Especially when you consider that Kimi has competely gone backwards this season. He is showing that he cant handle Hamilton or his own team-mate anymore. Kimi is able to show speed in the latter stages of a race, but by then, its usually too late. Consider that he is also poor at qualifying and that he is the highest paid driver, it begs the question why Ferrari would want to employ him for another season, even though Alonso is ready and waiting for the call-up.

Now, if Ferrari had hired Kubica or Hamilton and snubbed Alonso, then there might be an argument for such an action. But Kimi...?

He was more likely going by the fact that for the past 15 races, Renault have had a massive disadvantage with their engine. How could he foresee that suddenly thy have gained massively when there is an engine freeze.

If he was in a Ferrari or a McLaren, he'd have won it. I'm seriously looking forward to next season if BMW can up their game oh so slightly. The lad is a top driver, and super consistent.

I'll give you a few reasons:

1. At the time, Alonso was pulling away from Kimi.
2. Kimi, for the last 15 races has been poor. When was his last race win?
3. Kimi was in 3rd place at the time, meaning he would have to overtake 2 cars, which these days, unless you have a car advantage, is nigh on impossible
4. It was 'Alonso' who he was going to have to chase down, not some rookie.
5. In the last race, Alonso took the lead, by luck, but he maintained the lead on merit.

Hamilton = FAIL.

Lost his cool totally. Schoolboy hot-headed error there.

Wasn't that bad. All he did was lock his brakes. His positioning was excellent. If he didn't lock up he would have been home and dry in all likelihood. It's a shame as he would have easily made the turn if he didn't over work the brakes. I think he just assumed he would need FULL braking force as he was going in later than everyone else when in reality he only JUST slid off the track with the lock up!

In contrast... it was Massa who was terribly hot headed. So many silly incidents throughout the race with him. And even after when talking to the media he still seemed to be raging with fury.

Prost was so exciting that despite having watched probably all his F1 races I can remember nothing about them.

except the one where he drove into Senna and Senna was very badly treated by JMB

Wouldnt you be if you were asked such ridiculously ludicrous questions?

Q. Was it right for your teammates in the pit garage to be celebrating when you crashed into a rival?

FM: Are you English? Is that your point of view?

Q. Yes, but is it right that people celebrate when people crash?

FM: Any time you see a Ferrari ahead of a McLaren, it is a good thing for the team. I am not going to rise (to your attempt) to put fire on the gravel. I have a good relationship with Lewis, and I will not do something to destroy something by purpose. That is true.

Q. I am not stirring things up

FM: I know, and I answered already.
Besides Hamilton didnt crash, he spun and was not life threatening at all.
