2013/14 Pre-season Friendly Thread

Perhaps Fergie was still burned by what happened with Veron, wasn't he £29m and didn't do all that well, that's got to be £50m+ by todays standards!

I'd be happy for us to splash £50m+ on say, Fabregas. Don't care.

This is why you have to buy players when the chance is there rather than when you are desperate for them. There are certain transfer windows when world class players are available and you have to be decisive.

Falcao, Cavani and Naymar won't be moving for a few years. If you wanted them you would have to have got them this window. Same for plenty of other players over the years. We have missed out on so many good midfielders because Fergie didn't want to splash the cash and now we are throwing money at completely unrealistic targets and hoping for a miracle.

You can't suddenly decide that you need a world class midfielder and expect to have 4-5 knocking at your door. Moyes will be sacked if he doesn't strengthen considerably this season. With the current squad we will win nothing of note next year. Plenty of managers have splashed the cash and still been fired but you might as well give it a go Moyes. He might get 2 years if he can get us CL football again but after that he will be expected to win things.

Ahh the anderson haters are turning now

but seriousky why buy quality midfielders when you can just buy another 30 million striker and platly your uber expensive defensive prospects in midfield?

Rooney berbatov etc when was the last time we even spent rvp money on a midfilder?

Your quoting transfers from 6 years ago that were much less than 22 million and significantly lower than 30 millions

I don't usually agree with Nick but he has a point.

Chelsea:

Mata ~£24
Oscar ~£20m
Hazard ~£30m
Ramires ~20m

United

Kagawa ~£20m

Thats a rough comparison of what the two clubs have spent on midfielders over the past few years. We have bought some like Anderson a good few years ago who have never shown signs of being good enough.

Anderson was 30 million euros give or take

Which at the time was about £20m. It doesn't matter what he cost, it matters whether he is good enough to command a regular starting place in the middle of our team. He doesn't so he needs replacing.

Well it's not, because Kagawa wasn't near £20million.

It was reported at £13.5ish at the time.

Seriously, what point are you making.... that its even worse than I am suggesting. I heard it was about £17m but I put "around 20m" to stop people saying I was lowballing it. Even if it was 30m you are looking at a huge spending gulf in every area between United and Chelsea over the past 3-4 years.

My point was that you got the fee wrong.

I'm not sure what your point is. There's a huge difference between what us and City have spent too. Heck, even Liverpool may have spent more than us. We haven't spent lightly, though.

But yet in the past 5 years, which club has been the most successful?

The depressing negativity and constant doubt and hate for Manchester United on this forum but it's own fans has become even more ridiculous than RAWK fans.

Anyway, it's the pre season thread, not the 'bitch about my club even though we were 3 points away from winning the league 7 years in a row' thread.

Which is of what relevance. I was saying that we have underspent massively in the middle and you just chipped in with nothing.

Yes we have considering the size of the club. Look at what Bayern, City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Madrid, Barca, Monaco, PSG etc have all spent. We have been servicing our debt which has cost us a huge amount of disposable income.

Hard to say really. Winning the CL and EL is not too bad.

Your inability to add anything to a discussion or talk about our issues is more ridiculous I would have thought. If you don't want to discuss the team then don't.

Anyway, it's the pre season thread, not the 'bitch about my club even though we were 3 points away from winning the league 7 years in a row' thread.

Silly us, I thought that we had just played today and had our weaknesses exposed rather well, coupled with developments in the Fabregas transfer that make it look even more unlikely to happen. When you discuss performances, you tend to try and explain why you think there are problems and why or would you prefer a nice simple "I don't think we played well" and leave it at that.

I'm perfectly happy to discuss the club and team with people that are rational enough to see things without throwing toys out of their pram all the time and take in the wider picture.

Not Nick don't watch matches and still want to sack the manager G, nor someone that thinks sticking a player that plays a floating position fantastically well is the perfect player to remedy our central midfield issues.

When you support a club, you don't tend to actually come across if you support anyone but that side, as most 'supporters' on here do.

Now I'm going to enjoy you throwing me into the 'blinkered' box and one that won't say anything 'negative about the club' because that's the standard response.

No middle ground with most, I suppose.

Also sticking Monaco in there, lol.
