Hmm, all this moaning about the sound of the new F1 engines has made me wonder.

Why did people watch F1 to start with?

Was it the top drivers racing against each other in the fastest cars built?
Or
Was it the loud noises the engines made?

Perhaps the FiA could take some inspiration from these chaps about making the cars louder and slower at the same time.

2014 is shaping up to be the most exciting season in aeons

I couldn't give a dead rats arse about the sound.

As for "live" The only time i ever decided to go to a grand prix (Silverstone in the Mansell era) I phoned up and enquired how much a ticket would be to be told £180 for some wind swept remote corner.

I replied "I want to watch it, not sponsor it" and put the phone down.
I'll stick to TV with all the home comforts. (mates round for a BBQ & beer without the queues and worry about drink driving)

RIP motorsport. I'm surprised you can tear yourself away from a console long enough to watch a real race - real as in live on TV :)

I flagged this up as an issue from the first testing that I saw in Jerez.

Can't say I'm surprised that others are now feeling the same way. The sense of sound is a huge part of F1. People who've only ever seen F1 on TV can never understand.

I feel sorry for them.

There isn't really an exhaust system, just a short pipe on the back of the turbo. The Turbo is muffling the noise.

The exhaust is not the problem, as I mentioned in another thread these engines don't have a wastegate as the ERS-H deals with the turbo speeds and boost etc... What that means, all of the "sound" goes through the turbo which acts like a good silencer. What is needed is to bin the ERS-H get an old fashioned mechanical wastegate and vent it to atmosphere and things would get much louder and angry sounding.

Or the FIA could just fake it with the ERS-H in place as is

(after all its a lot harder to silence something than it is to make some noise)

Thing is, these people make up about 99% of people who watch F1. Most people have never heard an F1 car live, so don't know what they have lost.

While those of us that have basked in the glorious NA sound will miss it dearly, the simple fact is we are a tiny insignificant minority in the grand scheme of things.

I disagree. Almost all of those who disapprove of the new engine sound haven't heard the new cars live so far. Yet the difference is clear and not insignificant.

Those of us that have heard V12s, V10s and V8s live are probably a bit more vocal in our disapproval because we have a very good idea how the V6s will sound live, based on the TV reports and youtube clips. But we only account for a tiny percentage of those who feel F1 has lost an important sensory element.

And you don't think its just people just joining the latest band wagon?

I've had a number of people who watched Melbourne go "new engines? What new engines?" when talking to them about it.

It's just like the 2009 wings, the stepped noses, and Vettel winning, its the latest "cool thing" to complain about. Soon enough something new to moan about will come along, or we will just stop worrying about it like the stepped noses.

F1s changed. Considering the alternative was F1 died, ill take what I've got and make the most of it.

I don't think people are just jumping on the bandwagon. Noise is a huge part of F1. I'd even go as far as saying for some people the noise is F1. Take that away and you have lost something significant, no matter how fuel efficient or clever the engines are.

Wings, stepped noses etc are different, and yes I accept people will always object to change. It's human nature. But this is much, much bigger than that. It's about losing a key element of F1's excitement and appeal.

That was exactly my point - there is no meaningful exhaust system!

In a way it no longer sounds like F1 if you look away. Listen to those gear changes of 2013. :D

2014 doesn't even look or sound fast. Sounds like cars cruising.

They do sound different, but that's not all.

They simply don't sound as good. Not as loud, not as powerful, not as high-revving, not as exciting.

If we can tell the difference in this clip, people watching TV will be able to tell the same difference, and it isn't a small one.

Ah, good on Spie had posted that. It really sounds like road cars.
