That said, a sole earner at 100k might still do better than 2 parents at 50k each, due to ridiculous child-care costs (if younger than school age).

Also, I have a few friends and colleagues with <100k combined household income with 2 kids and living in London/Surrey.

Well there’s pluses and minuses of shared income. Benefit of “free” childcare but also higher tax rates in these 2 scenarios and also tapering of benefits.

My other pet peeve is that taxes should be across a couple, rather than individual for shared households. It shouldn’t matter how the money is earned across a couple.

I don't know how people do it!

We have a joint income of 75. And I can't imagine paying child care costs even here
75k in Wales should be pretty comfy no?

We're just scraping buy in South London nearer 80k, but also no kids, no idea how people do it (short of having family nearby to supplement childcare).

I agree in a way with that, but government does not see that. But when it comes to benefits then they do.

That why government polices are on way.

Well, at least those who still vote Tory, even after the past 12 years of omnishambles can breathe a sigh of relief. Their own party’s actions have handed Labour a solid majority at the next election as things stand, so the dreaded ‘coalition of chaos’ may never come to be.

Yes and no.

Our mortgage is 207 so at these low rates (sub 2pc) its fine.

Even 5pc would be OK. But obviously changes things like holidays.
Add in energy prices and it becomes tougher.

We are in South Wales (Cardiff area) so houses aren't dirt cheap.

Houses ballooned over covid (260k to 320k) so I guess they could retrace more in a fall too.

But. That 260k we paid in Feb 2020 did get a small 3 bed detached with 500m2 of land (if Google maps distance tool is accurate).

People aren't currently supporting Labour because they think they are good but because the media is telling them the Tories are bad - that's not real support so is the kind of poll lead that can evaporate over night. Nobody has any clue what Labours policies are because all they say is whatever they think will go down well in the Twitter echo chamber plus people simply dont like Starmer. If the Tories carry on with the infighting then I could potentially see either a hung parliament or a tiny Labour majority that will quickly get wiped out when the nutters try to take over and resurrect Corbyn. As long as nothing happens to cause a GE in the next year I think we will be safe from a Labour govt. It would be good however if Labour could make more of an effort in Scotland to neuter the SNP - they would have my full support for that.

Denial is usually the 1st stage, IIRC.

This is a bit ridiculous.

I don't expect Labour to lead by this much come election time. I'm sure some of Truss' stuff will be tempered.

But to say this is just the press telling people what to do sounds like trolling on your behalf.

People are being hit in the pocket. That can directly be attributed to truss and Kwasi.

Its incredibly patronising to suggest everyone (and its getting to everyone) is being hoodwinked by the press.

Ultimately we'll see but if you genuinely think there is real support for Labour I think you will be disappointed.

As I said all the Tories need to do is prevent a GE in the short term (and get better at comms lol).
