This will go down well...

Honestly, if I have to make a few changes to my habits to stick the knife into Russia a little more I am happy to make them. Putting your washing machine or dishwasher on in the middle of the night isn't exactly a hardship. I would do it now if it made my electricity any cheaper.

Have a flat energy unit cap was a stupid idea if there is going to be a shortage over the winter as plenty of people, myself included are not going to be anywhere near as careful as we could be because fundamentally prices are capped and your usage doesn't result in sky high costs.

If I was looking at £5k/year I would cut back everywhere I could. At £2500 I won't be quite so concerned. The unit price cap also means that the government debt they are taking on is going to be far higher than it should be as well.

Yes don't we send it to Europe then they sell it back to us for a profit lol

No, we have more gas flowing into the country than we can use, interconnecters take the surplus to Netherlands and Belgium, we do not buy it back from them. We could do with more storage, it was decommissioned rather than sold off, work is ongoing to recommission it I believe.

Prices aren’t capped. Unit costs are, but if you use loads you’ll pay more than the £2500 cap. I’m sure you know this, but I’ve seen lots of people think they could have their gas on all day long and not pay more than £2500 which obviously isn’t true.

They can't make blatant political advertising of policies ... sounds more likely Guardian didn't join the dots that the advertising is to tell people when the electricity & gas cuts will happen

we do need to make some recommendations like De though for reducing energy use in public facilities .(xmas lighting .. swimming pools ... football matches ... HofP)
how much additional electricity will be used by people watching the world cup, say.

What electricity and gas cuts? Truss just assured us we won't be asked to cut back. Are you suggesting she's not to be trusted?

Besides that.....blatant electioneering adverts they won't get away with, but it'll be subtly worded and presented as a public information service, that just happens to trumpet their policies in the run up to the GE.

At what point does liz look in the mirror and just go

"****"

I'd love to be there to see those tears trickle down!

Did T212 also say the USD rising against every G10 currency was down to Truss?

And yet the pound fell against the euro which coincided with her speech..............????

So yes the dollar may be rising against every G10 currency but whats important is whether the pound fell more than any other G10 currency.................which funnily enough the pound dropped against every G10 currency after 11am.........................

You mean like these treasury "adverts"?

That's how I read @fez 's post too, sounds like they think you pay no more than 2.5k no matter what they use.

If people want to equate small moves to certain things then they can, frankly I think blaming every small drop on Truss is ridiculous. On days of stock market falls the pound usually falls more than the Euro and others because of the nature of the UK economy.

I don't think many people think that at all. They have almost always gone to great lengths to stress that its a cap on unit price and the average person won't pay more than £2500 based on average usage. The figures for energy have always related to "the average household" for as long as I can remember. Our usage just happens to sit around the figure thats always used as the average so its very easy to know how much our energy costs are likely to be if we didn't change our behaviour from previous years.

My point was that I can stomach £2500. I would be very unhappy with £5000 and would do everything to cut back if that was the case. As it is, everyone is subsidising the energy costs of those who are not going to cut back. i.e. myself. The more energy you use, the more you are pushing the burden onto the tax payers.

It should 100% be a tiered system of unit price, especially if there is talk of rationing at any point. Once you start getting beyond the average usage, the price cap should probably start to increase.
