Why would there be high unemployment? No reason it would be particularly high.

Governing for the majority is what Labour plan to do, by investing in things that support long term success like education and infrastructure, ensuring there are good public services etc. Basically all of their policies would make life better for 'the majority', and society in general.

What do you mean by center ground? Starmer's Labour is nowhere near being on the extreme left.

Edit: of course they will have to contend with whatever mess the Tories leave behind when they're done, but they'll actually be going in the right direction.

Maybe people prefer a PM that had some shred of honesty, integrity and was actually working to make the country a better place for everyone.
There are people like that in politics? Please let’s us know who these people are because it looks like it’s nothing but the dregs of the political class left.

£ now 1.09 to the $.... ouch.

That's just pushed up prices for everything again.

This growth that is going to rescue us all better not be slow in stepping forward.

So, for the advocates of these policies, what's the timeframe where we can see whether they are working or not?

GBP against USD/USD -3.20%
GBP against Euro/EUR -1.91%
GBP against Yen/JPY -2.58%

Pretty impressive for a day's work Kwasi.

Hey, you know the pounds only dropping because it's just the dollar strengthening!1!!1

But I have to say, -2.58% against the Yen in one day is very impressive! :p

Isnt it about time one of the usual suspects came in to remind us the pound was over valued anyway and this is actualy good news.

He did say this during his statement earlier "it is businesses that employ most people in this country".

That sort of intellect just can't be matched.

I think we now know why he was laughing at the service. He couldnt stop thinking about his speech.

How on Earth do people fall for this sort of nonsense?

Full Fact said:
The 1924 minority Labour government (January 1924 to October 1924) bucked the trend, with the unemployment level decreasing - on this measure - slightly from 1.32 million to 1.29 million and the rate decreasing from 11.9% to 10.9%.

Still, by looking at just the record of previous Labour governments ignores the fact that the same trend can be seen in some previous Conservative governments. For example, taking figures for the Thatcher-Major Conservative period in office from the LFS, unemployment increased from 1.4 million at the end of 1979 to over two million in 1997, and from a rate of 5.3% to 7.2%.

I refer the gentleman to the 1976 poster , labour isn't working, Maggie moaning that unemployment was 1.5 million or something, pretty soon it was up to 4 million.
