2023 - how's it been for you?

@Pawnless Endgame whats wrong with your eyes?

I have eyesight in just the 1 eye with a prescription of -28.5 dioptre. Contact lens wearers will know that's pretty damn high. I then developed a cataract which got operated on at the age of 43. It's normally a common procedure done on older adults which takes 15-30 minutes per eye. Because of the shape of my eye and high myopia, the procedure took 3 hours. All went well for the next 10 days, then it backfired and I had to go back to theatre 3 more times and had 4 months off work in the end. So that put a dampener on 2022, but it's mostly good now. Still on steroids 1 year on but mostly good and 2023 has been a great year for me.

Could have been a lot worse but could have been better. Not my worst year but definitely challenging, mentally and physically.
Ironically joined a PT gym towards end of 2022 to help my existing back issue only to make things worse by injuring my other side when they tried to push me too hard. Had 2 months where I honestly thought I wasn't ever going to be able to walk properly or be able to drive ever again.

Mental health still isn't great right now and physically still having some issues but I'm getting there :)

Pretty dull and boring.

Not lost any relatives though so can't complain.

My condolences to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, may the coming year be your yang

Been a pretty good year for me especially when comparing it to the last few.

The biggest change was getting a new job. The whole place is just a better atmosphere, everyone works together and the stress is pretty non-existent. They really look after their staff extremely well. I love it. The 30% increase in Nett pay also helped as I went from "getting by" to being able to "live a little" if I want to

Apart from that, everything else just ticking along with no dramas and I am happy about that :)

I'm just waiting for the universe to realise its forgot about me and give me a right kick in the stones soon just to balance it out, you know?... As Deadpool said - "Life is an endless series of trainwrecks with only brief commercial-like breaks of happiness". I am on a commercial break by the looks of it :o

Can't really complain, survived a pretty brutal round of redundancies at work. All the energy saving investments are working out well. Got a new car. Kids are doing well. Son's had a brilliant year at school and sport. Daughter is well on track for her 11+.

Decent year playing football myself. My vets team were unbeaten all the matches I played. Could do with a new knee though. An injury from my 20s really causing problems now.

Negatives:
- Lost my business earlier in the year and had to make staff redundant. Simply wasn’t able to get things back on track properly after covid which had a big impact on me. Stopped training at the gym, started drinking a bit and generally felt quite low for a while.

Positives:
- Managed to get a senior management role at another firm. That along with working weekends doing freelance contracts, I was able to get back on my feet.
- Got together with my girlfriend just before covid, not the best of times but shes stuck with me through the lot, so I popped the question on Christmas eve and got a yes.
- Quit my job after 8 months so focus on my contracts and become my own boss again

Way better than last year (lost my job then girlfriend at the time left)
You be surprised how much disposable income you have when you are not in a relationship :D

Positives:
Built up enough money to pay off my mortgage in April. As my house is rented back in the UK, this funded my travels to may places throughout the year. Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Cyprus, Malta and Morocco.
Turned 40 years old 2 weeks ago, went for an full body health check on Saturday. Everything is working as it should (still waiting for blood results)
Started a new job 3 weeks ago as an Senior IT Engineer, been thrown into the deep end with an Azure network migration but getting there.

Negatives:
Ended up having eye laser surgery after a injury in martial arts while sparring. Will probably need to pick something else when I go back next year.
Getting weaker at the gym, could bench 120KG now its 100KG on a good day :( Getting my testosterone checked on Thursday just incase. But getting old is pants and Im starting to feel it now.

Overall, first world problems! 2024 will continue focusing on my career, health, fitness at the gym and German language skills.

Still feel numb after losing Dad in 2022.

Got married and our first one is on the way this year, so a better one. There’s some good stuff coming.

A big pile of ****

Life is horrendously dull and aggrevaiting.

Christmas is a tedious chore of doing the same thing I've done countless times before as well.

After a nasty car accident at the end of last year my wife gave birth to our son in January and he's doing extremely well! Already managing to walk about (somewhat).
Business has been ok this year in market that can be difficult to earn a living from, and I'm set up to expand what I can do next year.

Upgraded my pc, over the moon with it.
Power supply died in new pc after 2 months.
Replaced with better power supply so I'm happy again.
Got a promotion that starts in in a couple weeks.
