***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

No thanks!

Ridiculous size that, no idea how people can use anything bigger than 32" 16.9/34" 21.9 screens for "monitors".

I am however very happy to see that Samsung are trying to push the monitor industry forward with improvements to IQ though! And "somewhat" sensible pricing too unlike most monitor manufacturers....

Still not OLED good but hopefully it should be a decent improvement over current LCD screens.

** Drolls slightly **
Very nice although the price tag is the opposite.. :p

For a monitor, it isn't actually that bad of a price all things considered, I imagine the resolution is the main thing that is stopping the huge price bump....

But yeah still silly money considering the price of 55" 4K OLED HDR TVs.

3840x1080 1080 is past its sell by date.. 32:9 I could find a use for that aspect ratio, but the resolution is terrible, needs to be 1440p + now to be useful for more than gaming. Gaming monitor only really or for really wide Exel speadsheets, not even any good for movies as to keep the aspect ratio and full video will create black bars on each side of the screen. That's why 21:9 still wins for me. Would rather have a larger 21:9 with 4k+ resolution, bad enough when videos are 16:9 on a 21:9 and 4:3 is just annoying for the old TV programs.

That's why I love the LG in my sig, it's almost perfection

It's a sweet sweet monitor for sure, and games would be amazing, and the pixel hit over a 3440x1440 would be about the same given it's wider in res, but shorter in height, so it offsets workload I guess.

But the 1080 pixels height would not be very useful for actual work. I use Lightroom and Photoshop a lot, and 1080 pixels in height just isn't enough to fit all my pallet tools in properly.

Also when watching standard 21:9 movies, you're going to have pillarboxes on each end, which would be annoying. Give me a 49" 21:9 QLED display with the same specs, then I'll upgrade from the 34UM95-P with a massive grin.

Yup The LG you have is great specs wise, but I don't want curved monitors and if they did one that wasn't curved I would have probably got one. I would like something larger than the 34" I currently have, it is so funny when you first get it it seems huge then seems to shrink over time, I could probably get away with a 50" 21:9 but it needs the resolution too to go up from 1440p that I currently have and more than the 38" 1600p, the same pixel pitch as the 1440p but in a 50" would be exactly right for me as a higher pixel pitch only makes a mess of the screen and things become way too small to read from a normal distance, also dislike Windows/OS scaling so that would never be used.

50" 21.9 for a monitor, what....... Still no idea how anyone can have a "monitor" of 40"+ on their desk.... :p

As for 4k movies, watched 4k HDR films of arrival and hacksaw ridge the other week and for those who find 1080P or less films to look blurry/soft on 21.9 screens (although I still don't find this with MPC-HC and madvr setup correctly), you shouldn't have any complaints with 4k films, noticeably sharper/more detailed even on a 2560x1080 screen

EDIT:

And yeah I would rather have the companies just concentrate on 21.9 first, support is still not 100% so it is stupid to be introducing an even more niche aspect ratio that will never take of.

As someone with a 1070 looking to upgrade from two 23" monitors, do you guys think the LG 29uc88 is worth the 365£.. I know it's freesync but I've never been bothered by free/gsync before I just love the look of widescreen over smaller 144hz type monitors. I've also seen a 28" 4k resolution Acer Predator for £400 which seems nice but I don't think is widescreen.

If you don't mind not being able to use freesync then yeah it is a nice monitor, you will need to google around and make sure that nvidia cards work with the screens ok though as iirc, 75HZ is only achievable with AMD cards through freesync.

Also, why don't you get the cheaper 29" versions?

This is LG's newest 29" model:

Their older one:

I like the curved aspect (I've not used a curved screen yet) of the https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-2...e-widescreen-led-monitor-black-mo-142-lg.html

As far as I know the monitor should work as normal on a nvidia card it just won't be able to use the freesync 75hz altho I also read that it's possible to force adaptive sync on through the nvidia settings, it's all confusing to me in all honesty! Thanks for the help btw

Personally I don't think a curve is needed for 21.9 29", imo, 29" 21.9 is the perfect size for wideness and flat monitors.

Just have a look here and search for those models anyway as iirc, that one you linked might have quite high input lag compared to other 29" models:

Also, yes you can use nvidia's adaptive sync or fast sync, this isn't dependent on the monitor.

I am going to get a new monitor this month and realized that going from a tn to ips or va wasn't the game changer that going ultrawide would be.

I have been playing Gears 4 stretched across my Benq 2730z in a 21.9 format or as close to measuring approx 25 inches and I now prefer it that way.

I am now convinced that I want an ultrawide but I really need a higher refresh rate than 60hz.

There isn't a 29 inch 144hz available with freesync as far as I know so how does a 34 inch 2560x1080 like this one look in terms of ppi?

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-3...led-monitor-black-red-mo-14c-lg.html#comments

Or should I go with a 29 inch 75hz instead like this one?

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-2...e-widescreen-led-monitor-black-mo-142-lg.html

I have a https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-3...led-monitor-black-red-mo-14c-lg.html#comments and I absolutely love it! I know some people say this resolution is too low for an ultrawide but I haven't has any issues with it.

Colours are great, refresh is smooth and able to play games on max setting on RX480 with no problems. There is some light bleed but nothing that ruins my gaming experience.
Thanks for the response. I have seen the reviews for this monitor and it has all the right boxes ticked when it comes to contrast etc.

The gaming experience is more important than just specs alone I guess so maybe the bigger monitor would be the wiser choice I think. Refresh rate is more important to me and as long as the ppi is acceptable and the image isn't ruined by it then I may purchase the 34uc79g instead.
