***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

If I remember correctly few months ago the guy from LG said we should have expected lots of news during 2016 as regards 21:9 monitors (and/or panels too?) but so far I'd say it's all silent like a tomb.

Any info about news coming at Computex for our beloved big screens?

I've just picked up an Asus MX299Q after using a 40" 1080p LED TV as a monitor for years, loving it so far! As a bonus, the speakers in the monitor are actually pretty damn good and perfectly usable. Thinking of getting a 34" 1440p one later on this year to replace my 2 x 24" Asus IPS set up.

let me sum up this 25 pages.

If you are looking for the best 21:9 monitor, or the best monitor right now in the market its Acer Predator X34.

Isn't that a bit selective though and down to each users expectations and uses ? I have the Samsung and could easily say it is the best monitor but I wont, since I not used them all. Plus, the X34 is G-Sync so to get the best out of it the user would have to have a nVidia card as well. *shruggs*

Or maybe there is statistic evidence that the X34 is the best monitor of them all, wouldn't know since not searched for which is the best one. :p

What exactly is Acer's excuse for the Predator 1440p G-SYNC costing £360 more than the Freesync when their 1080p G-SYNC and Freesync are separated by only £100? It should be the same chipset driving both monitors, shouldn't it?

The PG348Q does indeed look very good. But personally I'm wanting 3440x1440 34" OLED as the logical upgrade. Hell I wouldn't mind if it wasn't 21:9 but 4K 34" instead because OLED 16:9 displaying 21:9 content/resolution = 21:9 as everything black is off :p

But realistically it's going to be very hard to switch from a monitor with a hardware LUT to one without. There's no comparison to the convenience and accuracy.

Certainly is the most expensive at least :D

For the Asus PG348Q

+ Better stand
+ Better build quality
+ Screen can rotate (although the new X34A fixes this)
+ Better colour reproduction
+ Better brightness and contrast
+ Never heard of one not reaching 100Mhz
+ No issues at max OC
+ No reported coil whine that I have read about

- More expensive
- Some see the rog logo as a bit of a waste
- Very slightly slower than the X34 in response times
- Little more power hungry than the X34

For the Acer X34

+ Very slightly fiaster (about 0.5ms response)
+ cheaper (just)

- They reach 100Mhz overclock, but some introduce flicker at this speed
- Reported coil whine on some models
- seems to be more bleed reported on the x34 but I cant confirm

Well very few people have actually managed to get their hands on the Asus due to them not being available for so long so even if it has exactly the same poor qc as the Acer you won't find that many reports of it simply due to lack of panels being out there. As to better colours aren't they exactly the same panel so surely post calibration they will be the same?

My Predator X34 has been shipped!! Please B-Grade Gods be kind!

Doom is ready!

I hope all goes well & I look forward to reading your experience with it. :)

I very nearly went for one of those myself, but in the end I just couldn't justify it so instead I've gone for something more modest, but it should still be a nice upgrade from my old Samsung 60hz T260 26" (which, I might add, has been a brilliant purchase) :

For the first time, I'll get to experience something north of 60hz & G-SYNC. If I'm not suitably impressed, then I can always return it for something like one of the LG 21:9's. :)

I lost count how many times I nearly purchased that Dell, if it wasn't for the fact I use my monitor to watch a lot of movies/TV I probably would have grabbed one, I do love the responsiveness of TN panels.

Its funny how different people are. Ive been on 144hz on the last 2 screens but 16:9 and im now about to soon sell my Dell S2716DG because i absolutely miss IPS and Ultrawide but i refuse to pay through the roof for the gsync models(and i dont have my 980ti anymore so no point either as im not getting pascal)

On one site, post calibration the X34 is well over 7200k and the Asus is hitting 6700k, so the Asus is very close to the 6500k mark, while the X34 is well above and will give a blue tinge with those readings.

Yeah but that is one monitor tested and lets be hones these panels seem as variable as the weather. Not saying the Asus isnt better but just i doubt it is that much better and it highly unlikely to be £100 better

Agreed, although I was responding to the chap that said the X34 is the best, when its not. The Asus could be £3k more, it would still be the best.

If were talking about the cheapest to the most expensive then that's a different debate and not one I was discussing.

I think one of the things that struck me about the Dell monitor is that it seems to get a very healthy and consistent amount of praise, which is something that has remained etched in my puny little brain. This way, I get to experience 'most' of what I wanted from an upgrade, and at least if it turns out to be a little underwhelming I can always start looking at the AOC / LG super widescreens again. I sure would love to order the ROG Swift / Predator, though. :)

Is this something that is largely agreed upon? Is the Asus PG348Q better than the Acer X34/X34A? I am in the market for a 21:9 and want to buy the best panel out there.

All help and comments appreciated!

Cheers
Ben
