***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

Looks outstanding with Flight and Driving Sims even The Witcher is brilliant as long as it can be set up in 21.9 and most games can.

There is currently a small reduction on a B grade LG that i was eyeing up:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/b-gr...e-widescreen-led-monitor-black-bg-135-lg.html

I went to see it on the high street yesterday and it does look great, so i will probably be getting one. Just need to sort out a mount or stand as well as i really don't like the one it's supplied with.

Despite my reservations I bought this one. The stand is really not great, but not as terrible as I had feared. It does wobble about a bit, but often it isn't noticeable... brain compensates or something. Still a bit low.

Still not sure about this 21:9 malarkey though. Instead of feeling like I have extra space at the sides, I feel a bit like the top of the screen is missing. That is coming from 24" 16:9 to a 29" 21:9, both 1080 vertical. If there was a 27" freesync 1440p 16:9 IPS available for a similar price then I'd be tempted to go that way instead -- cutting the vertical resolution back in some games to grab some fps back.

I picked up one of the clearance ones too, but haven't opened the box yet. It looks like a return as the top is sealed with packing tape and one of the box sides has a small hole in it. Going to try it out tonight.

What's the picture quality like on yours? Also any backlight bleed or other nonsense?

Got mine new in the end. I have mixed feelings about it so far, but I don't really want to taint your first impressions of your new screen, so perhaps don't read this until after you've got it running.

...

Pros:

No problems with brightness, I have it turned down to 20ish. The colours are great, as you'd expect from an IPS. Contrast seems good. No discernible flicker. The matte coating is really good -- LG have improved on this massively in the 8 years since I last bought (and returned) an LG.

Freesync is great, probably a must-have for me now. The monitor can be run at 75 Hz without using freesync as well, which is nice.

Cons:

The stand is pants, as discussed, but unless I really give my desk a thump, I don't notice it moving. Its too low for me, and would require a very sizeable book to lift it.

Mine has some bleed in the bottom left and top left - it isn't the worst I've seen (Samsung T24D390 takes that prize) but it does combine with the glow out at the periphery to be quite noticeable in the evenings when the light is lower. I'm snobbish about this so am on the fence about whether to return it and try again, make do, try a different model, or abandon IPS altogether.

I tried Arkham City the other night and there was something unsmooth/unclear about the picture during movement even at 75 fps. It wasn't frameskipping, vsync was on, and it didn't seem to be stutter, so I couldn't work out what the deal was. Last night in ARMA3 (looking out a window, so dark surround, bright centre) it became clear that there was a lot of ghosting visible. I've never noticed ghosting before. I still can't say for sure whether it is the screen or my eyes, but I think this might be why fast movement looks ugly. I'm going to try and get my camera working today to get some fast shutter speed shots and confirm this. And perhaps there is a setting that will fix it, although I think I've tried them all.

The specs say:
Response Time_Typ.(on/off) = 14 ms
(GTG) = 5 ms

So it claims to be fast, but is GTG actually a standardised measurement?

Try going to the monitor OSD and adjusting response time, "high" has the fastest response time but introduces inverse ghosting, personally it looks noticeably better to me than "medium" (no inverse ghosting) though.

And the spec sheet for monitors is a joke, just lies and false advertising, better to go with tftcentral or pcmonitors.info for info on response time/motion blur.

Panel specs from tftmonitors suggests that it's the same performance as my current one (Dell U2212HM).

The 29'' LG uses LLM290WW2-? with a 14ms G2G as standard (presumably this can be overdriven via the OSD down to 5ms).

My 22'' Dell uses LM215WF3-SLC1. Also 14ms G2G, this time overdriven to 8ms G2G.

I'll reserve judgement until i'm home.

The only review of the panel I can find is from an older version of it used in a Dell in 2013

That is very sensible. There is a good chance I am doing things wrong / have set this up poorly. Nexus18's post has been helpful, and I'm playing around with the response time settings + testufo.com's demos now.

Interested to hear your opinion on the screen when you get a chance to try it out. :)

Thanks for this. I did some tests alongside my old TN monitor and its pixel response is slightly better, but there isn't much in it. Clearly I'm being much more sensitive in my evaluation of the new screen, which I guess is fair enough.

The inverse ghosting on High was too much for me, Medium or Low seem to be the way forward for me.

In the end I couldn't deal with the lack of vertical height compared to my old monitor (only a 24") so the LG 29UM68 is going back. At some point I'll pick up a 1440p 27" but it seems that now isn't the right time (c.f. 'panel lottery'). So the 21:9 club has shrunk by one I'm afraid.

Bantu mate, I hope your screen turned out to be a good one.

OMG loving my predator, i was a bit upset at first only getting 95hz on the overclock though :(

OK. I managed to spend a little bit of time over the weekend with this monitor. Haven't tested out Freesync yet as i didn't have a Displayport cable handy (should be rectified today). I have moved from a 22'' Dell Ultrasharp (U2212HM) that i've had for about 4 years.

My thoughts:
- Stated before, but worth saying again. The stand is awful. Only tilt adjustment is available and my panel moves at the lightest touch (If i type with gusto it can cause the screen to shake a bit).

- Screen Quality is.. good, almost great. Brightness and contrast are spot on (better than my old Dell) and the colours are true. There is some backlight bleed (or IPS glow.. can't really tell which) on the bottom and top left hand sides, but it is only noticeable on a completely black screen. The matte coating is great, huge improvement on the Dell Ultrasharp!
- Settings. Out of the box it comes with good colour calibration and a number of presets for gaming and other tasks. I need to play with this more.. I didn't like the gaming presets at all, way too much sharpness.
I tried out the UFO test and found Medium response to give me least ghosting. Again, coming from an IPS screen this was something i expected and i would say it's slightly improved on the Dell.

I do notice pixellation on my desktop wallpapers, but perhaps i just haven't found any with high enough detail (have used the ones on the reddit UWMR forum)

- Games: So far i've only played The Witcher 3 on this screen and it is quite an experience. The extra FOV helps immerse you more in there. Would like to try it out with some space games so will be reinstalling X3 to have a play.

For the price I paid (£199.99) this is a great quality screen, with the stand being the main let down. For someone who games casually and does some work on the screen it's very good value. At full retail price (249.95) it's a tougher sell though, I probably wouldn't have bought it. At the budget end that £50 goes a long way (like towards a stand :P)

But the height is the same as your 24"?

Nah, its about an inch shorter. I wouldn't have thought that small difference would matter but it did to me. I set them both up for 1920x1080 and it was really noticeable, and I realised that if I'm going to spend money on a new screen it needs to be bigger all round.

Good run down of the screen. My opinion of it is almost exactly the same. You got a great price on it!

Going back to 24" 16:9 has been tough for me after a few days with all that side-by-side real estate. Now thinking about a 34" 21:9... :D

I'm after a 21:9 1440 screen too.. It's just so expensive and with quality issues I can't justify it. If you add G-sync to that you might as well give up.

This is a shame because 'regular' GPUs are now getting powerful enough to drive these big screens. 1080 screens are much more reasonable but just isn't worth it coming from an already 1080p screen...

Perhaps faster standard GPUs will bring more demand for 1440p + screens and bring prices down, but if they can't get the manufacturing right it's always going to be a crapshoot.

Hmm.
