***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

My initial specs were for a 28'' 1440p monitor with Freesync, but i didn't manage to find anything that was at the right price point for me, so in the end i "settled" for the LG.

All my monitors have been 2nd hand / B-Grade so i have been lucky to get decent quality ones each time. I can see this LG lasting me 2 years, which for £199 is ok.

yeah. fair enough. Even with returns it would only take 1 bad experience to make me think twice about buying used/b-grade.

Well the order is placed. Single biggest upgrade I have done in a while, but I have ordered the LG34UC88... Unsure of the curve, but will be interesting (its for work and gaming, but work is mainly excel so it shouldn't affect things too much.) But going from a 23" 1080p screen I think I should notice a difference. 2-4 weeks till arrival though, but wanted Amazons customer service as when paying the silly amount of money it is I am not risking pixels, ghosting etc and the cost of return postage. There comes a point where if you are paying over a certain amount for something you can trust it will be 100% right out of the box.

Now to order the graphics card to support it, as I don't think a 780ti will cut it!

Snap, I ordered the last one direct from "rain forest" on Friday. Should get it tomorrow. I am using a 24" 1080p on a G1 1070. Will let you know what I think.

You're the ******* that bought it before I did then! Hahahaha! I must have ordered late Friday after keeping an eye on it for a couple of weeks, noticing it was delivered now in 1-2 months. That now says 2-4 weeks, but please let me know how it is!

Quick edit - Can you also let me know how your card handles games on it... some on the Graphics section insist that a 980ti is enough, some say a 1070 is needed, and other a 1080 to keep the frame rates at 60fps.

I'm after a 21:9 1440 screen too.. It's just so expensive and with quality issues I can't justify it. If you add G-sync to that you might as well give up.

This is a shame because 'regular' GPUs are now getting powerful enough to drive these big screens. 1080 screens are much more reasonable but just isn't worth it coming from an already 1080p screen...

Perhaps faster standard GPUs will bring more demand for 1440p + screens and bring prices down, but if they can't get the manufacturing right it's always going to be a crapshoot.

Hmm.

Why don't you take a look at the Samsung 34' then? VA Panel so no risk of back light bleeding, gets a decent write up and one of the cheaper 34' monitors too. I came from an IPS so was worried about going for a VA panel but got used to it within days and now I don't even remember if the quality was any better on my old IPS as the screen looks fantastic.

I thought VA panels suffered from more input lag and lower response times than both IPS and TN film panels. What are your experiences?

Bought a displayport cable to today and enjoying Freesync on my LG. It's probably all in my head, but i swear the picture quality is better than over HDMI!

Just received a lindy cromo dp cable just to see if it helped push 95hz to 100hz, and unfortunately its made no difference :( yes its only 5hz but I wondered if the cable I had was holding me back as I never got a cable in the box when the screen came originally.

Looking good man :) I wouldn't worry about the 95hz if everything else is fine with the monitor. The other potential issues far outweigh that.

Yeah very pleased now, not even touched any colour and what not settings yet, looks good out of the box but I'm sure i will have a fiddle :)

Video playback on the Samsung is terrible though, Yeah it's great for games and desktop work.

'Terrible'? How so? Video playback is not even terrible on an old 2009 monitor they were giving away at a yard sale, nevermind a 2016 Samsung top end monitor.

Let me know what's so terrible so I can go back and look for it and update the wider group here :)

Your last line encapsulate A LOT of what goes on on this forum. 'All in your head' :D

Input lag and lower response time. Maybe I'm the wrong guy to ask but I see nothing of that with the Samsung. I'm sure someone can dig up an obscure review, pounce on a single line and let it completely colour their opinion, but I don't think you'll noticeably find much wrong with any top of the range monitor unless you got unlucky in the draw.

I can however tell you two things about the Samsung. I did one notice some 'smearing' for a brief second. Almost like a ghost effect. Only for a second and then never again. I spent the next 10min recreating the exact scene but it didn't happen again. Not seen it since. Secondly, colour banding (another thing I never knew was supposed to be 'a thing' to look out for) is real but can be made to go away completely by playing with gamma settings.

Anyway, there's a big thread on the Samsung 34' on here somewhere. My first preference was also an Asus/Acer 34' IPS but as I'm not prepared to gamble on screens, the Samsung made a very pleasant '2nd choice' monitor and is perfect.

I noticed a big difference in image quality between HDMI and displayport on my 29um65:

Another question badass regarding me noticing banding on my 29um65:

Well this is interesting, decided to try a different cable (replaced my display port cable with the HDMI cable) and:

- the banding seems to be a lot better, definitely not as noticeable
- on the white saturation test, 253 used to be a lot more visible when using the display port cable and I can't even see 254 now where as with the display port cable, I could just about make it out....

What gives?!

How do you lot know if a game supports WQHD before you buy it? Is anyone playing old games like C&C on one? I'd imagine you'd want a small window for that, deffo not fullscreen.

Watching " downloaded content " there was an awful lot of pixilation and blocky playback, when the same content was displayed on my current monitor and previous Hazro monitor there was no such problem.

Weird. Been watching live streams, other streaming content, downloaded content, YouTube and not once seen pixelation unless the stream is slow. I'll be surprised if Samsung would release a screen in 2016 that plays ALL its playback pixelated and blocky. That just won't happen.
