***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

what's your setup? are they on monitor arms that you can move vertically? or do you move your head? (which i imagine gets uncomfortable after a while)

In response to another thread I stuck the X34 on an Ergotron wall mounted arm just to confirm it was a good choice. I usually have a 21.5" 16:9 screen for monitoring stuff on the arm up top and the XR3501 usually sits in my race sim setup.

The picture flatters a bit as the two screens have different curvatures so don't exactly match. You are right in that the XR3501 doesn't adjust vertically so the X34 sits a bit high but it isn't a permanent setup more of an experiment. Just like the 40" UHD monitor which ultimately got swapped out in favour of the X34.

I'm very happy with my new LG (34UC98-W) and the improvment in terms of colour over my old Dell is amazing. I have managed to overclock the pannel to 80Hz and the difference even from 60Hz is very notiable even in Windows.

Thanks OCUK for an epic service as normal :D

Can anyone recomend any good monitor mounts for these screens? As my current one doesn't work with the new screen.

How do you like the curve in the screen ?.

Another vote for the Ergotron MX really good bit of kit.

Maybe it's just me i dunno but i feel these monitor sizes are starting to get a bit out of control. 38" is fine from a distance but sitting 2 feet away you're gonna end up twisting your neck a lot i'd imagine.

Not at all. The day my 34" arrived I thought it was massive, but could certainly be bigger. As long as the picture sits in your peripheral it's all good. A different aspect ratio is needed - I want a tiny bit wider but a fair bit taller.

In terms of screen area it's closer to a 35" 16:9. Well, probably 34" with if you're looking at the physical width of the 21:9 with the curve.

With my setup I get 50-60 in GTA V, 40-50 in Assassins Creed Syndicate, 35-50 in the witcher 3, 50-60 in Alien Isolation, 60 in Street fighter V, 1fps reported in Civ 5 lol. oh and 60fps in Pacman Champ edition :)

Interesting setup. If you don't mind I'd have a bunch of easy questions for you.

What's the best curvature for gaming? Do you notice the difference between IPS and VA? And between 100 and 144 Hz? Do you play upscaled on the ZR3501 or just FHD? How noticeable is the difference of resolution?

In my personal preference, they're literally the best and worst that the 21:9 family has to offer but I won't tell you which is which :P

Would going from 23' 1080p (95/6 ppi) to 34' 2560x1080 (81/2 ppi) be noticeable as to be not worth recommending?

The only reason is I wish there was a high frame rate UW monitor under 30'.

Absolutely. I went from 1440p to 2560*1080 and am super happy with result. All of this is subjective,of course, but for gaming it's a different league. And easier on the gfx card. I prefer it for general browsing too.

XR3501 is better for games or even sims with dash/cockpits as there's sufficient curvature to give the impression of some wrap around.

I don't dislike the curvature on the desktop but it's obvious in programs so maye not for CAD/Draw utils. No denying that compared next to each other the XR3501 has a chunky desktop res.

I limit the XR3501 to 120 Hz as that's what it should be! Anything above that is overdriven and adds smear. The 100 Hz of the x34 is plenty for me as well so not much of a difference to me. I tend to limit games to 75 fps anyway to get a better average frame rate.

Fast paced games can benefit from the lower res and higher sustained fps as a result but I'd always prefer an RPG on the X34 with 1440. I did buy the XR3501 with my aging GTX 670 in mind which powered the race sim setup I have so again the lower overall res helped there.

The XR3501 does have a tad more contrast in the darker scenes and minimal BLB but the panel is less consistent otherwise. I genuinely prefer to watch films on it though!

At the end of the day it's average at best but has some redeeming features such being older GPU friendly and great for race games and was -48% discount in the B Grade section. Otherwise I wouldn't even have considered it.

I'm going to try Redout on it later so maybe it'll shine in that Wipeout homage too.

It's a massive difference in pixels per inch. a 34" 2560x1080 is going to look very soft next to a pin sharp 23" 1080p screen.Dont think i would, personally. 29" 2560x1080, sure, but not 34". 34" 2560x1080 has the same ppi as a 27" 1080p panel, and i though that was too soft next to a 24" 1080p screen, let alone 23"

Thanks for the feedback, that's all I wanted to know, especially about the fact that neither IPS nor VA handle 144hz very well. I never tried one personally but that was my idea too. 100hz, 120 tops is plenty of fun, anything above that I'll leave it for marketing bullfecis rubadub :D

OK quick Redout back to back comparison. Think modern wipeout. Everything set to Epic.

XR3501 @ 2560 x 1080 - 120 Hz refresh & game set to 90 fps max

= 90 fps constant frame rate and very smooth game play. More than adequate resolution.

Acer X34 @ 3440 x 1440 - 100 Hz refresh game left at max fps

= 50-100 fps varying frame rate and despite G-Sync I immediately noticed some lag in comparison to the XR3501. The higher res was noticeable if you looked.

Acer X34 with resolution set to 80% scaling = 100 fps constant frame and the same smooth game play as the XR3501 @ 90 fps. Slightly reduced resolution scale was noticeable again when you looked.

Otherwise it so fast paced only the smooth frame rate mattered but the reduced 1080 resolution was not noticeable when fully engrossed in a race.

EDIT: Forgot to add that's with 1 x 980 Ti + i7 5820K.

I really want to buy one of these screens but I already need more power than my gtx 1080 can provide on GTA V to turn on the extra distance setting.
