*** 2nd March - Apple Event - Official Thread ***

You know, I fear what we may end up seeing, is two tiers of cpu or gpu intensive programs. I.e. those which can only take advantage of the iPad 2s power compared to that of the that of the first iPad.

Quite possibly. Apple tries to limit fragmentation as much as possible, but ultimately any kind of technological advancement is going to create that kind of divide.

This is true whilst at the same time the problem by implementing such a policy is that you would limit the technical capabilities and advantges of the iPad 2.

Here is a comparison breakdown of the iPad 2, Xoom, Playbook and Touchpad courtesy of Engadget.

It's only really a problem if apps come out which run awfully on iPad 1, but are advertised as supporting all iPads. I've come across some iPhone apps which are obviously designed for the iP4 and run terribly on my 3G...

photoshop whine whine whine. The specs of the iPad 2 are good enough for 2011 and they only tell you half the story. What's the thing like to use, and that's not even with it running iOS 5.

The Xoom:
Crappy screen
Crappy HD video support
SD card reader won't work till a software update
Software update needed for flash
Where's the apps?
Lots of crashes/bugs

Ticks a load of hardware boxes though!!!!

:D I agree. This is why Androind fans seem a bit strange to me when they come trolling in threads. The first thing that is always said is "The *insert apple product here* isn't revolutionary! But I never see people posting Apple threads saying "Wow this is revolutionary!!" so I have no idea where they get that idea from! Who said the ipad 2 is revolutionary in this thread? Yes Android tablets/phones generally have faster/better hardware but why do people need it? Without the support of a fully stocked app store with lots of native apps you could have a quad core processor and it wouldnt make a difference. The android store apps are all small sized (most below 1MB) so what do you need the hardware for? I would like the ipad 2 for skyping people at home. If I bought the android devices it seems the app developers release full versions of apps on the apple store then "light" versions on the android store for whatever reason.

Until Android has better app support I don't see it's appeal even if it had 8 cores and 16gb of ram. It's simply not needed!

Take Infinity Blade. Awesome looking game, and now that the iPad 2 is released, I'll bet epicgames (or whoever) will push the boundries of the tech and bring something even more gorgeous to the iPad 2, but will retrospectively not run as well on the iPad.

And considering the iPad2 can run games up to 9x faster.... thats a lot of scope for game improvement for the iPad 2.

It's because there's not really a culture of paying for apps on the Android Market. A high proportion of Android apps are free compared to iOS apps. There's no point investing money in a full-featured Android app if you're not going to get the money back.

I'm sure they'll get more apps etc, but it's always a case of catch-up, and if I were out buying something now the price of the iPad and the support > anything else. Who wants to buy something and sit about waiting months and months for it to evolve, by which time there's something else you want to buy.

If you have purchased apps on the iPhone can u add them to your iPad to? Or do you have to buy them again?

Some you do have to buy again if they are not a universal app. Some apps do have separate versions for iPad with better graphics, more features etc and these are the ones which charge again.

I believe they get it from apple themselves with their constant tag lines of amazing, revolutionary etcetc. Every press conference you hear the words a 100times, apple can't add a camera to a device without claiming it's magical. It is a bit silly when your really think about it.

I would also like to add that their is a lot more to a device than apps...I do appreciate the speed of devices through Internet browsing, media viewing etc...for all the apps I have on my ipad compared to my tab - its the tab I will go to if I want to do something quickly, plus let's face it we may have a hundred apps on our devices but how many do we actually use, and all the ones people do use regularly are of course on android.
Androids app store is of course improving as time goes on, Sonys involvement in app store will naturally move things along much quicker.

As for the iPad 2 hardly anything we didn't expect , usual apple style in releases. I will keep my current pad and see what a couple of years bring to the table

Any iPhone app will work on an iPad, but the universal apps or dedicated apps are much better.

Example: an iPhone app not designed for an iPad will run in windowed mode. Whereas a universal app will appear slightly differently on each device, but you'll only have the 1 app appear in iTunes.

Then you get iPad only apps that don't work on the iPhone, such as Angus birds hd. You can see universal apps by browsing the iTunes store. They are the ones with a "+" icon where it says "install".

But if you were only allowed to keep one of the two, which one would it be? Of course Android tablets have certain advantages over the iPad, but Apple is making a lot of money by offering the best overall package.

Will the HDMI cable work with the older iPad or is it something that will only work with the new model?
