I think what he means is buying with the intention to use and then deciding to sell it later because the price has increased or you got bored of it etc is a bit different from buying with the sole intention to sell right away.
But he would still be selling the card at the same price as scalpers which means he is adding to a problem that he is complaining about. Now if he sold it for the same price he bough it then that would be different.

Yeah but let's face whose going to do that and even if you did then what's the chance a scalper would be the one buying it to relist so you would be just doing yourself out of the money.

I think price is the best way to determine who gets a luxury item that is in such limited supply.

I was looking at the egg place shuffle and they have a 3080 Ti for $1800 today. Anyone wiling to pay that much, for that level of performance, obviously wants it more than I do, so they should get it instead of me.

The whole normal point of enthusiasts and gaming is to be able to turn all the settings to max.

And I would like to be able to play with RTX on thanks, stop trying to tell me how to play my games.

No one is telling you how to play your games, the point of the entire conversation is that the prices on eBay are a reflection of the behaviours of buyers and not sellers. Buyers drive the market and ultimately determine the price, that’s how it works.

The crazy FOMO that surrounds high end graphics cards and those people with the FOMO having plenty of money that they’d usually spend on a night out, holiday now have cash to burn and it is what is driving up prices.

No it's demand and supply, that's basic economics.

In the case of GPUs, the supply is effectively fixed. They only have so many wafers and increasing supply takes years.

The price is determined my what the buyer is willing to bear. Nvidia can’t realistically produce more GPUs than they are already.

The issue is that there is enough of a market of people willing to pay £1500+ for the price to be sustained at that level. It’s really that simple.

If there is no demand for a 3080 at £1500, they would never be priced at £1500 regardless of how much supply there was.

To this day it boggles my mind that so many people don't mind shelling out 3x the price of a card minus the warranty.

Yup and it pretty much reinforces Nvidia’s wish to push GPU prices even higher. If people stopped buying cards like the Titan/3090, there would be much better value down the stack for regular people. But alas they sell absolutely shedloads of them.

"potential to make an already good game prettier"

That's the whole point.

It's progress, or we'd all still be playing Pacman
The game I've played most in the last year was C&C remaster which is a HD remake of a game from around 1996 so it just shows that graphics and RT can't replace good oldskool gameplay.

I've been playing a fair few older games lately but they'd still be even better with a modern graphic make over + [proper] ray tracing. Quake 2 RTX has spoilt me a bit in that respect.

I'd say the opposite is true. If all we wanted to do was have fixed settings then we might as well buy a console. A gaming enthusiast will spend time tweaking the settings to achieve the best performance for their particular bespoke set up. Then they can free up some headroom to install SweetFX, ENBs, Mods etc..

As any enthusiast will tell you, some settings could be turned down to improve performance, depending on the intended purpose (FPS, eye candy, non standard resolution etc.)

Minecraft ray traced. 2 FPS on 1080 Ti.

Anything ray traced.

Oh yeah I'd feel really comfortable paying £1400 quid to play a prettier version of a game I was playing about 8 years ago lol.

And other thing. "enthusiasts" talk like they are "gamers". Yet a gamer would be happy just playing any enjoyable game. Hardware enthusiasts tend to be more interested in staring at numbers in the corner of the screen and don't actually allow themselves to relax and focus on gameplay.

And then there are people who equally enjoy spending hours dialing in their system and spending hundreds of hours of stable gaming at the best settings that they can get.
