4080 & 4090 Coil Whine Thread

Definitely. Will make me feel better at the very least lol. You going to RMA yours?
Yes, but not for coil whine reasons. I can ignore that tbh as I use headphones. The problem I have is I can’t control the RGB as the MSI Center software crashes. RGB software is the worst software in the world. Got all my RGB how I want it, but the GPU can only be controlled via this software which just crashes. Seems like it’s a common complaint with this software. So I’m going to try and get a non MSI model most likely.

I used Open RGB for my last Suprim. This one MSI centre or Open RGB isn't detecting the card. Sure there's a fix I just haven't had time to look into it yet.

Let me know if you find one please I’ve not found one yet. How hard is it to create software to change RGB? I heard that to use OpenRGB you need to run the MSI Mystic light software once, then OpenRGB will work. Chance would be a fine thing.

mine detected my card after like a day and a few reboots.

Been fine detecting it since, there's a service for the RGB try restarting it "lightkeeperservice" and "mystic_light"_service"

Just ran the Cyberpunk benchmark on mine for comparison:

No case since I'm waiting for raptor lake to rebuild, but I'm convincing myself it'll be better when it's under my desk instead :p

Oh god, I don't think you have anything to risk swapping that one out.

msi 4090 suprim x here... has coil whine.. running 3d mark it is clearly audible. on idle i hear a constant slight tick sound. ive check fans and they are all clear... considering RMA as playing isingle player games its wuite loud when FPS is high..

Don't go name-calling people on here, it lowers everyone's IQ to your own.

One of the guys said he locked his fps to 120 at 4k. As for me, I can confirm that the CW I found in three cards happens to the same extent if it's capped at 30/60/120fps or let run wild.
Where did I name call?

Stupid is a word, it is only stupid people who take offense to it, I can be stupid too.

It is a fact it is stupid if you know anything about power supplies or how high FPS effects things like coil whine, otherwise you were previously ignorant then or forgot.

I was building a new system for a work mate yesterday and his MSI Suprim X also has coil whine like @Hostile_18 showed on his video, sounds like a hive of bees but again does it at high fps and the clock boost maxing out and even at lower fps and clocks it still buzzes, he's ok with it as he has his system fans high and he's not sensitive to noise as he said "I have kids" so they drown out any other noise  .

So seems a pretty normal thing on these. I will ask the other guys at work that got the ASUS TUFs and the others that got the Zotac cards how their coil whine is too, so far only 4090 I have had experience with is the MSI SUPRIM X and it buzzes like a bee hive sadly and would annoy hell out of me but not my card and he's happy with it and reality is he may get one worse, but sounded just like the videos I have seen now, so I'm coming down to its just how they are, we did try 1600w corsair from his old system too and did same , he now has a new Bequiet 1500w like one I own for my system dark power 12 and it made no difference too and my cards don't buzz on mine so must be just the card doing it and tried my 3090 GameRock oc from the HTPC and it didn't buzz on either PSU when we were testing.

So nothing to do with psu and psus of this quality are best you can get anyways.

Thanks for the info good to know. So now I'm unsure of if I should get a replacement, ask for a different one or keep it, as its quite mild.

Just keep it if you can live with it, if not only real option is watch what people say regarding different models and AIBS what their cards are doing, sending it back for same make and model will only come back same or worse or a little better and not worth the hassle. If you like the look of the card and the card you wanted for the looks then keep it, SUPRIM X seems to do this so far and I only have used one and it does it 100% at levels I have not heard before from previous gens apart from broken cards or the silly high oc ones like the KINGPIN 3090s that were comical for their coil whine.

Check this for coil whine on the kingpin 3090..

The Kingpin card does not have coil whine in that video, that card is actually serenading its owner with a nice song.

To be honest that video I posted with Red Dead 2 at max settings was worst case scenario. Even though it produced that noise when I was playing I didn't notice it in game, with audio playing.

I'm leaning towards keeping it. Because swapping it out I'll almost certainly get a worse one, as relatively speaking it's very mild.

I fired up God of War a previously silent game and changed my mind. So its going back for testing, the CS agreed from my videos its at a level it should be swapped.

I've also authorised for them to test my new card their side first, to ensure I get a good one.

Can't here some of the above video's, so mine could be wailing away like a baby and I can't tell

Basically though I think this thread is just telling you guys to grow up a bit more before playing with the nice toys

Has anyone chucked this in some software to see which frequency range it's at?

I found to remove coil whine completely (Asus Strix 3090). Is to take the backplate off and remove the VRM thermal pads on the back plate. That completely removed the coil whine and the VRMs were completely fine without it. Never got over 40C.

from googling around the internet it seems like every 4090 has coil whine and the people who claim they don't probably haven't listened to the card during a game.

Where and what case you have probably makes the most difference to whether you notice.

I honestly thought mine had none untilI bent down and put my ear to the card and then I can tell it's fairly audible.

But then the glass side panel faces away from me and the solid side panel of my P600S came with sound dampening foam/rubber whatever it is attached to it.

Even the FE cards have coil whine according to what I read, one forum had a poll about it and it was like 70% saying they had whine, the rest probably just weren't aware they do
