4870 + AC Accelero S1 Rev2 = F..T..W.

what is everyone using to measure the vrm temps? Ive got a trail version of Everest 4.50.1330 and that showing my vrm temps as hitting 65c with the stock cooling. Dunno if that is accurate or even reading the right thing though.

Gonna be sticking a waterblock on my card this week and really dont want a full cover block unless my vrm temps are going through the roof

Was the 65 at load running furmark?

Ok finally got around to fitting an Accelero S1 Rev.2 and turbo module onto my 4850, never known such a fiddly time-consuming task it was a real pain.

Do you have to replace the stock VRM heatsinks? I didn't on my 3870 which has an Accelero. I'm thinking of removing the Accelero on the 3870 and buying a 4850? I'm not too keen on fiddling about - but I can fit the actual cooler without a problem.

there is no stock VRM sinks, its a part of the cooler, you get a VRM sink with the Accelero S1 and you should use that.

Some people say use the stock coolers base, from what I have seen DONT use that, when I got the card on the VRM's temps where 57-60 idle and on furmark shot up to 107+ degrees in about 10 seconds.

I have since put the VRM that came with the Accelero S1 back on with some MX-2 and its now at 45-47 idle compared to 50 before when I was using AS5 with the VRM sink before, allthough I think first time I did not have the VRM sink with the accelero S1 seated problem, now everest reports load of 81 compared to 105 before and about 91 on the other VRM readings in GPU-Z so all is good with that now.

I reckon my 4870 is dead now :p

Last night i was playing on some games (CS:S more importantly) and every so often i would get a large artifact which would last for a second or two then go away for 5 minutes. I decided i would install the 8.6 hotfix drivers to see if there was any performance increase oer the standard 8.6, after instalation i got a message warning me of my security policy and when CCC started there were no iptions but just the empty boxes where they once were. I then decided to try the 8.8 betas which were no different, finally i decided to install the 8.7's. once i had booted up into safe mode and ran driver sweeper and then rebooted into vista (64bit). As i was installing the drivers i got 2 error messages saying that it could not find compatible hardware (or something like that) and so i decided to reinstall the 8.6's which came on the disk. As soon as i was about to install my whole computer froze and would not respond to anything. I turned it off and the heatpipes on my S1 were very hot and i realised that the fan had not been working (the only problem with having silent fans unfortunately) Upon reboot there were no red lights on my 4870 (there should have been if there was a problem?) and the whole computer started up in vista, there were red lines all across my screen and a minute after i was in vista the whole screen went purple and would not respond for a second time. Now the computer will spin up but nothing will be displayed on the screen.

RMA time? if so i will be asking to see if i can change it for a 4850 as according to XS there seems to be a problem with the Qimonda (think ive spelt it right) memory which seems to be dieing very easily.

First off, you can run the Accelero S1 without fans and still keep it cool.

Its normal for the heatpipes to be hot as thats where all the heat is going. Try a CMOS reset using the jumpers on the mobo and see if that works and check power connectors. The proberbly you decribed sounded more like software problems untill you said about the black screen. I had that problem once, turned out to be dead system ram.

the red lines you speak of, were they like this?

thats whats happened to my x1900xt when the vrm had burnt out due to a couple of the heatsinks falling off without my knowledge. stupid unsticky sticky pads.

I got the Arctic cleaning stuff, used 3 damn lots of thermal paste and a load of that cleaning stuff as I had the cooler on and off like 4 times, first time I was using wrong screws to put the cooler on, nearly snapped the card in half, second time it was just doing it before thinking what I had to do next. but its on now and havent got over 57 yet in Furmark, was playing Crysis and the VRM's hit about 61 and the core hit 51-52.

The red lines were kinda like that but they were sioldi red and extended horizontally across my screen with no breaks, i the VRM problem is where it died though because 10 minutes prior i had reseated the heatsink in hopes of getting better temps (my VRM's were sitting at 80' max when i recieved the card but had soon deteriorated and were running at 120'+)

Just installed my 8800gt with S1 and no fan on the heatsink and it worked fine but as soon as i added a fan it would have the same problem as my 4870, if i unscrewwed the screw that held it in the PCIe slot it would work again, i'm beggining to think that one of the screws was shorting it but i will have to check tommorow when i can be bothered.

There is no way my VRM heatsink is going to fall as mine is screwed into place however I am now concerned about those little square heatsinks falling off -would the card tell tell me if one falls off and what should I be looking out for if one does, would it also be the Red lines pictured further up this page?

The card wont know if one falls off it does not have sensors, its possibly the ram would be very unstable and could damage the ram. Tbh I dont think they will fall off if you put them on right, I had a right hard time getting the ones off as they where stuck so good, thought I was going to pull the ram chips off the PCB , infact the standard stuff on the Accelero S1 ramsinks was stronger than this Akasa thermal tape I have now.
