*** 4K Player Thread ***

Does the Xbox One S support HDR on 4k Blu-rays? We've got a new 4k TV and I want to test out what HDR looks like. I'm considering the Xbox One S as a media centre and Blu-ray player. Seems like a decent deal to me and I can move the old Xbox One to the dinning room.

Yes and very nice it is too. :D

Hi,

I have a Xbox One S and Samsung KS8000. Got the new Star Trek on preorder and have 4k netflix.

I have my PC connected to TV, I did not look into it but it seems I can not output 10bit from my 980ti with HDMI? Another strange thing, when outputting optical from the TV to my Stereo DAC - Stereo Amp the volume is really low. I had it set up this way with my old TV and it worked fine. Any ideas?

Also any must have 4k discs?

Thanks.

I don't think there has been a thread specifically about xbox one s, so I will add my question here -

for xbox s, beyond being a 4K blu-ray player, as a media player was surprised it does not seem to support hevc codec for usb/personal media, even though that is the codec on the 4k blu-ray. (is this a licensing cost issue or hardware limitation ?)

Personally have built up a (1080p) blu-ray collection but have not found I have watched blu-rays many times (how about you) so now question the worth of investing similarly in a 4k blu-ray library versus just getting access to 4k streaming services.
The blu-ray upscaling capability of both panasonic players does seem it would give existing blu-rays an extended life-span, versus the xbox one s though.

UPDATE: OBlivion+lucy apparently had pressing problems and some would not play on xbox one s - may explain oblivion availibility issues
- no specific details on batches

I have amazon prime (only just got it to make the most of the KS8000) and netflix 4k access. Just started watching Red Oaks (an original series) and am blown away by the quality considering its a 4K HDR stream!! I have Sicario on UHD Disc only watched the first 10 mins so far but it did not impress me as much as Red Oaks. I think this is due to Red Oaks being set in the 80s so there are lots of vibrant colours on screen and it just looks fantastic.

I have just bought the Samsung k8500 4K player from amazon for £262 to go with my LG 55C6V :) Roll on saturday:D

Arrived early :)

Yeah i believe only the Panasonic players can output video from both there HDMI outputs on the samsung only audio can be sent from its second HDMI output.

Interesting comment from very comprehensive(best?) ub900 review

Two HDMI outputs to separate the picture and audio: If this possibility had not much influence in 1080p, with UHD TV and especially HDR10 with Blu-ray UHD, you can clearly get a much better image Separating the audio from the video and connecting the video output directly to the TV or video projector. Besides, on the OLED the contribution is more obvious than on any other TV!

To optimize this configuration, the Panasonic UB900 offers everything you need as settings. You can even turn off the audio, output only the video stream via HDMI 1, only the audio stream via HDMI 2, or output audio only at Coaxial or Optical output, turn off the analog or digital circuits of the player to reduce even more Interference, activate High Clarity Audio mode to improve audio quality, choose to cut the picture into hifi playback to improve audio, and even cut off the player's display.

so they suggest audio+video on hdmi out, may, through interference, degrade video.

[review is very complimentary of internal dac, does say hevc not supported on usb/sd media - that surprised me]
