5870/5850 User Benchmarks, Thoughts & Feelings

just wondering if any of you guys who are lucky enough to have 5870 have tried any of the folding@home clients. be interesting to know how it compares to a 4870, i'd expect almost twice the performance.

ahhh nice one Raven, good choice! they are great cards, Adwol, i will try f@H in a sec after lunch :) (good thinking as well, i have heard little in the way of F@H for these cards)

Pretty sure 16xQ defaults to 4xMSAA, since 16xQ is a nvidia AA mode, and SSAA doesn't work in DX10 according to Anand's review.

Anyone wanna try 2560x1600? :)

Another go at Crysis Warhead with newer drivers. Also ensured that everything in CCC was set to performance except AF and mipmap to maximum. Lower min but higher max and ave scores:

EDIT: Just realised I had Super-sample AA mode on which might have affected my score.

I think reading the anand review super sample is poor and shouldnt be used unless it is the only mode you can

Question is this good or bad ?

1920x1200 2xaa16af all maximum possible on the hardest stress map Frost.

I would say that is a very good result for the crap that is crysis, considering XFIRE does not scale as well as SLI in it, its very good. But please less crysis and more decent games.

I'm on a stock cooler so I can't do much...

Your temps that bad on stock cooler? you cant even squeeze 3Ghz out of it??

"Fallout 3’s engine is by default capped to 60 frames per second, which can make benchmark results very unclear, especially when testing at lower resolutions or with high end graphics cards. To remove the 60FPS cap you’ll need to find the Fallout3.ini file in \Documents\My Games\Fallout3 and edit the file so that iPresentInterval=0. This removes the frame rate cap, and allows us to get a much better idea of a card’s abilities."

I tried this and it made no difference. The performance I get is still good - 60fps most of the time, forcing AA to stay on is tricky though.

You don't need to force AA on. I thought I had to force it in CCC but turns out if I just use application settings it uses the in-game and looks much better.

Hey virus, I don't think it's a great result but I think that's just due to initial drivers with the 5870. Doesnt seem like you are getting much with crossfire.

Checkout my results same test earlier in this thread, you've got a better cpu than me and +1 5870. I get 23.5 / 38.27 min/avg, you get 29.6/47.8.

I think dual gpu performance is never great at launch with a new gpu, it will come with new drivers though.

Edit: I just ran the test again measuring CPU usage during the bench and CPU isn't the difference. Highest core was ~70%, 2nd 60%, 3rd 30%, 4th 20% so cpu isnt the limiting factor here.
