5D MKIII or 7D??? Please advise

How come you see many news photographers with battery grips with LCD screens all lit up, yet a stonkin pricey camera as this, it seems a bit... bland? or is it because theirs has the Wi-Fi features?

But regardless, thats impressive kit!

Also, these WiFi battery grips, what warrants them to be £400+?

They probably keep the displays on all the time or something :p

Did I mention how amazing the viewfinder on this thing is?

In most your posts? If not, then you've edited it out :D

I'm nearly set and ready to roder, just enquiring about stock and am leaning towards a 24-105. It'll stop me messing around with lenses for a while, will let me just focus on shooting and learning, and will reduce all the stuff I take on my holidays/trips.

It might have bad moustache type distortion for landscapes at the lower end, but LR4 should be able to fix that easily enough. A 17-40 will just be too limited for an everyday lens.

I hate you all (especially Robbie) for all his talking it up and little tests vs 40D :(:(:D

ANy worthwhile accessories worth investing in, I'll pickup a 3rd party battery and a cheeky 16gb SD backup card, but I've already got x2 166 speed CF cards which should do for the time being?

A Nikon strap :p

I've not bought any other accessories really, got 12GB of CF cards but main storage is the 128GB SDXC which will take 3000+ photos :D

:D

But you've done that. Any Leica straps available for less than £3k?

That SD card is crazy, as long as it won't slow down the burst shooting then it's grand. Just pray it doesn't go wrong :)

I'm clearly missing the point of the grip. Extra size and weight just so you can put an extra battery in there.

What's wrong with just switching to a 2nd battery when the first is nearly out? :p

You can hold it steadier and achieve slower shutter speeds.
Personally I only use one battery in the camera to avoid additional weight.
When you shoot with two camera's at a time, I generally find you don't have to worry too much about battery life.

Ok, another question, im just full of them :)

Is there a cheaper alternative for the wireless file transfer adaptor, other than the Canon one?

They send files straight to a paired up computer so that they can be sent immediately to companies that buy images. Can also use them for tethering which is extremely useful in professional studio work where the client needs to see the image immediately as it comes off of the camera to adjust the scene as necessary.

This SDXC card is a monster, minimum read speed is 45MB/sec while normal sees around 49. Write speed is 38MB/sec. I'm using the Sandisk USB3 card reader though, Ray, you have a USB2 one right? What kind of speeds do you see on yours?

Also, I think I've gotten up to speed with all functions of the camera now. I don't understand the point of the multiple exposure mode though, the results seem rather pointless considering there's a dedicated HDR mode already and a 9 shot bracket mode too.

Anyway, I did quick and dirty test out the built in HDR mode at ISO3200 and the results are promising, very little noise from the in camera result and even running the saved source images through Photomatix results in pleasing results.

Only thing I don't like is that the resulting HDR image is saved as a JPEG file. Okay, maybe this isn't a huge deal really as it seems compression is quite low anyway so little to no JPEG artefact I could see, but it would have been nice if it saved the final result as a Tiff or DNG.

On almost any other camera if you HDR 3 shots taken at ISOs above 400 then you get a grainy mess most of the time!

I have a Firewire reader for the CF cards, the SD card is a backup and not as yet needed to use it so not downloaded anything from it thus far. And yes, i only have USB2 reader.

Sorry I've not been able to do the LCD photos tonight, been packing for a wedding, leaving first thing in the morning.

Wait, did you say £65 for that battery grip?!

Thats incredible, especially given that it looks to be pretty good quality and has the features of the new grip. I held off ordering an official one when I got my mkiii because it seemed like a hell of a lot of money for a grip, so I thought I might wait to see if it drops.

I find that I mostly use grips when portrait shooting, which isn't something I've done much of lately. For just £65 though this looks to be a no brainer.

Less than £65 :D

It comes with an AA magazine too so if you do run out of battery power on a long shoot then you could bung in some Alkalines to tide over with.

That cartridge is in all the Canon one's I've had but i have never had to use it, ever.

Are they not in other 3rd party grips?

I can download a 8G card in under 4 mins :p

Ohh nice, I just plug mine into the front of the PC and head off to hibernate.

Another long day of sitting on the sofa browsing the web for camera things :D

Another question regarding CF flash cards. I have x2 16gb Transcend x166 cards, would these be fast enough to fully utilise the burst rate and use video reliably on a 5D3?

I'll be picking up a 32gb SD card for backup but just don't know whether I should replace the x166 CF cards.

Might just hold off and try them if I get the body.

Found a video review of the Pixel Grip on YouTube

It would seem from this guy that he feels the buttons are spot on as well as the finish matching the camera. However its the fact that its all plastic, rather than the magnesium alloy construction that lets it down. As he feels he wouldn't want to trust it to hold anything heavy, plus it doesn't have quite the same weighty feel, so he isn't going to bother with it.

I suppose still for the price, its pretty good for just being able to shoot portrait orientation.
