5D MKIII or 7D??? Please advise

ordered a 5d3..... what have i done !!

Winnings!

It's also not embarrassing to put a nifty fifty on your 5D3!

agreed the perceived feel and weight of the 5D was better, it looks and feels more complex and professional.

The noise control is obviously better on the 5D

Fanboi :D

For me I've never really wanted to hold a Nikon and have always wanted a Canon. Weird!

His first comment was how heavy my 5D was and he's a climber who climbs with a bag of rocks on his back!

It was my sisters wedding yesterday and the first time I've ever had gear envy :D

The photographer had two nikon bodies I think D4 iirc. My god I can't wait to see his pictures because he used flash probably once. He showed me a few images when I got chance to speak to him. The high iso stuff was simply stunning.

He used A lot of primes and watching him lob lenses into a bag with no caps had me shuddering ;)

I was struggling at times with the 2.8s I have on a crop, I absolutely must have a FF. This years bonus is going on one :D

Climbing with rocks on back? ''Doing it wrong'' you're supposed to climb up the rocks! ;)

It only weighs around 1kg which isn't too bad. I love the weight of my 40D, the XXD body feels fantastic to hold.

Oh add batteries and 1.4 glass and the weight adds up. His D800 only has Nikkor G glass and those tanks weigh a ton alone!

I've also started using a custom picture style as the below settings retain more highlight detail while giving a more cinematic image and this is equally good for video recording. The standard more is more contrasty and OEs highlight detail.

This is confusing me, you shoot raw right? Picture styles aren't used in raw?

You will see that pic styles do apply on raw, just cycle through raws of different styles and you can see the difference.

Pretty sure it only applies it to the thumbnail it generates from the raw file which it displays on the screen. Perfect example if you have a B&W picture style and shoot raw it'll still come out in colour.

Yeah that was my understanding of it. Again I was led to believe the only time it can apply it is if you post process using dpp and it will use those settings on a raw as a starting point :)

All the information I have ever read has stated picture styles have no effect on your raw file other than a preview on the screen. I have no idea how that would effect your video files which was what made me curious with the comment mrk made :)

Hmm I'm sure I saw otherwise in the images but will double check when I'm home and on the monitors.

About time lol :D

Been playing with friend's d800 today and we've been comparing real world use features and have realised a few things.

D800 has a noticeably smaller viewfinder, less pretty LCD, the body doesn't feel as robust and we both agreed the perceived feel and weight of the 5D was better, it looks and feels more complex and professional.

The noise control is obviously better on the 5D as well and the menu ui looks dated on the Nikon as well.

Both are brilliant though but I'm glad I stuck with this. It really down to the system you're happy with.

Does the amount of light in the view finder look different though or affect framing between the two cameras? Interesting points! Thanks for the comparison. Did you take any shots side by side with them?

The D800 viewfinder I felt was a shade darker although that may well be because the viewfinder itself was smaller and because of that, less light entering it.

Composing and manually focusing is definitely better on the 5D due to it being bigger. It's really weird because the eyepiece itself looks bigger on the D800.

I took some sample shots with the Nikkor 50 1.8 and my Sigma at the same so will upload those when I get home later. Both cams were at the saw settings for exposure although it's not really easy to match up the other settings because of the way they are both set up and the difference in metering systems.

Still it should be a decent rough guide on what kind of difference to expect!

Back home and just checked, different exposure settings argh!

I'll meet up early in the week again and redo them again :p

Edit*
Yup the picture style applies to the preview image only!

I'll get the pics soon enough!

On another note though I think that the Sigma batteries I bought are playing funny games and not the grip now because even with one battery in the body only I saw drop charge by 10% and that was only taking a few pics both on and off live view over about 30 mins.
