5D MKIII or 7D??? Please advise

Well, my shiny new 5D MKIII and kit 24-105 lens are sat in the local DHL delivery deopt, and will be delivered tomorrow - BUT IM IN LONDON TOMORROW AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Right I think the time has come to upgrade a little. I have been using the 40d since it came out and use it 80% of the time for motorsports etc. I reckon the 7D is the next step here? 5D would be to slow for this, plus it will reduce the range of the 200mm due to being full frame?

Is there anything coming out to replace the 7D soon?

That's unfortunate Z! :p

I've been using mine without the grip for today and I think I prefer holding the 5D without the grip whereas the 40D felt best with grip. The body of the 5D is a bit fatter than the 40D and the feel in the hand is just fine for portrait shooting and I found the size convenience a bonus over having the grip. That and attaching my tripod mounting bracket to the bottom is a better fit on the body than it is on the grip for placing the camera down on the ground as it sits on the tripod mounting bracket instead of lopping forward because of the higher centre of gravity.

I also managed to scuff the head of the camera in the bag because when put in with grip attached it rubs against the velcro/material areas of the bag when inserting and removing so the mag alloy part of the head is a little scuffed now. never noticed this before on the 40D as it had a plastic head and slightly smaller in size.

teaboy5, Yeah you'd lose some range but gain more DOF and better tracking from the new AF system. The 7D does have faster buffer but the 5D III isn't far off at 7fps (tested multiple times now and each time I get 7fps).

Edit*
Seen that UDMA7 (1000x) Lexar Pro cards are £160~ on some sites, considering getting one to make use of 2 card setup, the CF for high speed shooting and the SD for everything else (mainly video). A 32GB card would hold just over 1000 shots at ISO 100 although that number pales in comparison to the 4100 odd on the 128GB SDXC.

Such a shame Canon didn't put UHS support on the SD card section of the body as the CF card section supports UDMA 7.

There's a lot of speculation going around as to the 60D/7D replacements which are expected imminently. Photokina takes place within a month and if having the latest body matters to you; it would be wise to wait a month to see if anything materialises.

Then again, new bodies or not - the 7D can be had for a good price now, and its still a capable camera - esp for motorsports as you mention.

Anyone played around with the multiple exposure mode(s) yet?

That channel is well worth subscribing to as well.

Coz the SD card slot has been gimped, unless they change it in a firmware update, then I don't see a reason having that fast a card, at least for now, especially I need the back up feature more.

Yeah having a fast CF card as primary then the SD as backup (or video) is the logical move.

I'm also finding that I tend to use Servo AF more now with this because it's so accurate and with a wide aperture you can easily use servo to track your AF point and not worry about the subject moving and thus requiring AF lock on that area again.

I have noticed one difference between Evaluative metering on this compared to the 40D though, on the 40D I would leave it on evaluative at all times and know that it would get the exposure right 100% of the time but on the 5D the metering in evaluative isn't 100%, more 99% on how it chooses the AV/TV in those respective modes. I have found Partial to be the closest match to Evaluative on the 40D. maybe this is how this new system/full frame works but it's not what I've been used to!

That is indoors though where there's a distinct difference between highlight and shadow areas (windows etc) but outdoors Evaluative is near enough spot on.

Edit*

The 7D receives a massive firmware update so I wonder if canon will pull one out the bag for the 5D3 as well?

Yea as mentione din another forum, i aske dif the sd card are faste rthen a typical cf 60x card and the answer is generally "no" as the 5d3 reduces the speed of the sd card making it pretty useless buying a fast sd card for the 5d3.

i guess we will have to wait for a firmware update.

Raymond did u get your 5d3 from DigitelRev? does it come with english menu's on the camera and english manuals etc?

The SD card is faster than a 60X CF card. Heck it's faster than my Transcend 133x card as well although it's not faster than the Sandisk Extreme III card:

I did a quick video:

Notice the Sandisk Extreme III is a bit faster but the 133x card is a lot slower so a 60x CF card will be even slower.

I got the second one from DR, even has UK charger. I think it's English manual but I haven't checked as the other one from Kerso is a US one with US charger, which I prefer as it takes up less room lol

One thing I have noticed moving from the mkii to the mkiii with regards to the files that it produces.

It is a little hard to explain unless you have shot one for a while and the moving on and (it may all be totally in my head like a placebo effect), although they are similar in a lot of ways, I find there are subtle differences. I can't quite put my finger down on the specifics but if the Mkii gives the look of Fuji Reala then the mkiii gives the look of Fuji Provia. If Mkii gives is a film negative, then mkiii is more like a slide. This is most noticable in skin tones.

As a result the mkiii in comparison gives more a magazine editorial feel with its files. The images are both smoother, softer yet sharper at the same time. This gives the impression of less grain (noise) even at base ISO and as a result to get the processing that I normally apply on my mkii files on the mkiii, I end up having to push it a little further than before with the slider. The files are more pastel and delicate where the mkii is more bold from the get go.

The brains are borrowed from the 1Dx so it's not a surprise that the imaging output resembles that of press materials as you describe, I quite like the look really, normally with the 40D I'd push for vibrancy but on the 5D3 shots I find Im having to tone down the sliders on my custom LR presets because they're already vibrant but neutral at the same time.

As soon as this goes below £2,000 will get one. Right now it would be an over indulgent purchase as I am quite happy with my 7D :P

For an amateur it would look so funny turning up at my girlfriend's running events with a 7D with a 70-200mm F2.8 IS II and a 5dmkiii with a 16-35mm mkii :P

Mine from Digital Rev has the foreign charger which is the battery box with the built in charger socket that flips out. DR had then just provided a UK adapter for it in the box.

Not really the end of the world though, as I already have a UK charger and this foreign one doesn't require a figure of 8 cable, so may actually be quite handy for travelling.

Camera menu, manual and the box are all English though.

Right, just got back from London, and collected my delivery frotm eh neighbour (god i love DHL at the moment), I have unboxed teh 5D and taken a few unboxing pics, when i remember the site i used to use a few years ago for uploading them, I will post them on here.

First impression OMG WOW, its a dream to hold, the L lens is fantastic. Charging the battery atm so i can actually use it for longer than 5 mins (litterally).

Will get pics up tomorrow, then teh fun begins, actual shots and asking you lot how the dam settings all work :)
