8800GT Ramblings Thread

Couldn't resist, got the dremel out and bodged a few extra sinks to use on voltage regs.

Idle stock cooler - 66c

Idle Passive S1 - 46c

Load (Crysis) stock - 95c

Load (Crysis) passive S1 - 71c

Not bad :)

Woot mine is on its way too! Get the turbo module ordered. :D

Got an XFX GTS 640MB OC XXX-Edition  a month ago, and I was looking at the performance of these 512MB 8800GT's, there don't seem to be a great benifit of upgrading from the current 640MB GTS on framerates, looks like some people are selling there GTS just to scrape a few extra FPS, I have got to say I will wait until the new GTS arrive in the new year for a much larger percentage margin of performance to what I already have. Its definetly a good upgrade for owners of the smaller 320MB GTS cards, but for machines that have already have 640MB GTS especially the OC versions, seems to be a waste of time and money on upgrading to a 512MB GT.

Reading up around the net I see people with some of the asrock boards are having the same issue as me. I reckon i'm gonna need a new board for this card. Is anyone using an Asus M2N-SLi with an 8800gt, or would this be a bad board to get. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

My inno3d did that yesterday after just a few hours of use. It just refused to detect the card, or maybe the card's just dead.

Heh, effective eh...I will however have to get some better thermal tape for the ramsinks (or just some more ramsinks) as the stuff on them doesn't stick. Good thing my case is reverse ATX so they don't fall off.
Dot of AS5 in the middle and four small dots of 50/50 super glue/water in each corner.:)

I'm gonna roll back to XP next week I think. :(
Don't really want to but there's a definate issue with gaming/sli in Vista.
Be good to see how the games run on my system in XP - cos they just keep stuttering on Vista. Grrr.
New benchmarks early next week.

Thanks for replying steve258 :)
I'd be more happy if it had posted and then decided not to work later on tbh lol. PC's always end up in confusion and expense whenever I decide to upgrade the buggers.

Im wondering why the BIOS version has been blotted out on my BFG card :

At least its running at the correct clocks tho

That's interesting.
So is mine!

But, mine ISN'T running at the right clocks of course.

I spoke to BFG in the States on the phone, and the girl said it's the wrong version of the BIOS on the card, and that I should send it back.
What a bloody hassle. I asked about downloading a BIOS and flashing it myself, but they said I couldn't.

So, gunna have to start an RMA.

I know it's only a small OC, but it's the principle, of not getting what I've paid for!

V1N.

EDIT: What the girl on the phone actually said is that it's possible the card has been tampered with. I said it's got the BFG heatsink and "OC" fan, but she said it's possible these were removed from another card, and fitted to this "standard" one. Sounds a bit far fetched to me... sounds like this card simply has a reference BIOS on it, but I have to go through the whole RMA annoyance, just for the sake of a BIOS flash. Even then, I could get another card back the same. Are myself and Meatloaf the only two in here with BFG OC cards?

V1N.

EDIT2: Meh! Just loaded Rivatuner, set the clocks to that which the card is meant to be. Hehe, that's better, breached the 10,000 3dmark06 points this time too.

Nope, i have the same card. As far as i know there are no problems with it (apart from i have installed it in the wrong pci-e slot!). Would post an image of GPU-Z if i knew how to lol. Can you not use that to tell your bios version?

Crappy photo of it atm.

Meh, it makes zero difference to cooling and it got like that within a week of being cleaned  I'm not cleaning it out again just because it's a little dusty.

And no, nothing holding it on there for now, I will fit one properly when I buy another Nexus 120mm.
