8800GT Ramblings Thread

Yeah noticed it today, on the box it says LIFETIME WARRANTY*

Then in small print "Product is protected for the products lifetime in the United States and Canada, and 10 years from the date of purchase in all countries outside the US and Canada, against defects in material and workmanship"

Still more than anyone needs.

If the new GTS is nicely priced then this GT I have maybe the shortest time I have had a GFX card :p

i doubt it will be priced nicely at all..

if its openly advertised as a REV2 card, with more shaders, then im certain etailers, OCUK being one of them, will enjoy jacking the prices up very high indeed.

Is anyone else getting temps of 100degC+?
I finally got mine running today (BFG pre OC card), made sure there is absolutely nothing near to the card either side and have got 120mm case fans front and back. However it's idling at 60+ and in 3d gets to over 100deg before it gets a bit unstable. TBH i'm a bit worried and tempted to take it back as it's unusable in this state. Any suggestions?

Use rivatuner and manually turn the fan on 100% using the low level fan control.

Or better if you are willing to take the cooler apart and reapply thermal material.

Take it back tbh, 100 degrees... That's just stupid.
Either return or get a more suitable cooler.

Thanks dr. sarf, the front fan is blowing at the card (the HDD etc is all moved out of the way). There isn't anywhere else I can fit a fan to blow directly on the card, pity there isn't a fan in the side of the case tbh (NZXT Hush). I'm at a loss what to do about it.
I am using expert tool and got the fan on 100% in 3d steve, but it's still getting to 98deg, this is crazy i've never seen temps like it before.

What are my rights if I was to return the card to OCUK, would the give me a refund or just tell me to sod off as it's technically working?

If it's not stable at the default clock frequencies then it's not working in my eyes, although I'd guarantee it'd be returned to you (after a fee of course) saying that there aren't any problems despite heavy testing...
Maybe if you went through BFG you'd have some luck.

Of course, there is the aftermarket cooler option.

That's what I thought Emlyn tbh, at OCUK they'd just test it out in the open on a board and say it's working i'd imagine. Maybe it's best to get in touch with BFG directly and see what they say. I wasn't aware there are any aftermarket coolers for them yet?

Bit of an update on the overheating issue. I decided to format and reinstall windows etc, didn't think it would have much effect but I was desperate. Now games are running much cooler for some reason, idling at around 58 and going to about 75 in most games. I definately think the cooling on these things is sub-standard so I will be on the lookout for a decent, easy fitting aftermarket cooler as soon as one comes out. Overall though the performance is stunning, it feels as though everything was running lagged on my old card (8600) even when the fps was quite high. Fingers crossed it's sorted out the issue formatting the pc, although I can't for the life of me work out why it would make any difference.

If you plan to get a 3rd party cooler anyway then you might as well remove the stock cooler now to reapply thermal paste cuz sometimes it really does make a difference.

But if your temp is fine now then just leave it, hopefully it's just a dodgy temp sensor.
