8800GT Ramblings Thread

My memory/core/shader sucks topping out at 680/1750/1000, guess I gotta live with it :(, does upping the PCI-E Frequency stabalize overclocked then?

Link to mod plox ?

I have no idea what you're talking about!!

One other question guys, which is the best 8800GT to go for from OCuk? I am getting the 512mb version but don't know what to get? I like the thought of having a warranty with OCuk (but its only a year) but is there a "hot choice" out of the ones listed? Ta.

How much does CPU effect FPS, im playing crysis on all high at low res and no AA and its quite choppy with my 8800GT, hovering around 18/19 fps, even when overclocking with rivatune it didnt make that much of a difference, appart from crashing the card (wasnt over heating just stopped working).

CPU is core 2 duo E2180 2.ghz. Ive heard it overclocks nicely to 3ghz, should I be doing this.

I noticed that in my 3dmark score my GPU score was prtty high but the CPU score was pretty rubbish.

This is all run with 4GB of ram with visata proffessional

Hmm, memory on my 8800GT sucks (tops out at about 1980), the core however is a different story
Hey Raikiri,

You have removed the stock cooling and added an Arctic Accelero + ram sinks + gheeto business. Is there any chance that the stock HSF was cooling the ram better than the Arctic ramsinks?

Do the ram chips get toasty?

My Inno3D is still chipping along at stock settings! :o But in fairness I've had a week plagued by technical issues and the card has been running just 24 hours in my system. . .

I will give it another day (maybe two) to get a feel for the card then the overclocking begins. I'm not even sure what app to use? I have been using RivaTuner to measure the temps of my cards so I have got half a clue how to use that, however the latest version is complaining on startup about my drivers not being supported?

I also hear that ATI-Tool can be used for nVidia cards, is that true?

Ati tool can be used for NV cards. But apparently Rivatuner is better, im giving it ago tommorow see why its better, personally i preffered ATI tool. but couldnt find a shader clocking part.

Hi Retrofly, welcome to the forums! :)

I would say the GPU does the bulk of the work but it still needs to be fed data by a fast CPU. I think it also depends on the game, some of them really do munch a lot of CPU power.

Have you run the GPU bench at the res you play at? (which is??) I'm guessing it's 1024x768 so looking at the results I published in this thread I get the following

1024x768/All High

Average FPS: 50.61
Min FPS: 27.29
Max FPS: 65.55

thats a stock Inno3D 8800GT with an overclocked Core2 Duo (2MB) 2800MHz. With a little overclocking on the graphics card I think that would be quick enough to enjoy smooth gameplay.

Yup!

BFG give a lifetime warranty with their card.

Thanks for the reply mate :) There are 2 listed, one is out of stock and another is listed as "pre order". Only £11 difference between the two versions, I notice a slight difference in spec but in real terms will it make any difference going for the slightly more expensive version? Cheers :)

For £11 you are guaranteed under warranty a small overclock, which you may achieve anyway. If I cannot wait until the GTS is out, I will probably by an over clocked card. It isn't bank breaking, but if your budget is tight, go for the cheaper one and clock that.

Geeze, I placed my order on Friday morning as soon as OcUk had stock available, my order status hasn't changed since then (Order Status: Security validation). Now they are out of stock. Does this mean I have to wait for more stock to arrive?

By the time there's new stock of the GT the new revision gts will be out have to laugh. One thing i have noticed is that pre overclocked cards command a higher resale value as ignorant people are attracted to them in certain places.

Ignorant people are attracted to them in certain places? What... like in Aberdeen? Cardiff?

Cards with a higher RRP will always fetch a higher re-sale value, and even overclockers will buy pre-overclocked cards if the price is right.

No chance imo, these have separate (if small) heatsinks with a lot of airflow over them from the 120mm fan.

Do the ram chips get toasty?

Nope, cold to the touch.

With the core and surrounding area reaching 90+c with the stock cooler and a lot of heat being chucked out from it they probably used to though.

I also hear that ATI-Tool can be used for nVidia cards, is that true?

It is, yeah :)

Ive been using Xpert tool, i prefer it to Rivatuner, its very simple to use and holds my locks at boot everytime.

So whats the general consesus then if you're in a position to upgrade? Wait for the GTS? I'm tempted by the GT now as it fits my budget, but if theres something much better on the horizon I can hold off for a few more weeks. Depends how much the GTS will cost and whether the price of the GT falls and becomes an even more attractive option.
