8800GTS 320MB Results so far....

Just got the BFG installed and popped oblivion on tried putting HDR and AA on in the Oblivion menu but it says you cannot have both on at the same time ? I thought with an 8800 it could do them both ?
ANyway it looks gorgeous at 1600x1050 I have a 24" and cant run 1900x1200 without choppiness not checked out fps yet.

Iput BF2 on at 1600x 1050 and put all the settings on high and it plays well. I am definalty cpu and memory limited as I only have an amd 3700 with 1gb ram

One really annoying thing with the double slot is that my stupid Epox board has a mic/audio/usb header in this space and the card would not fit with the lead on, I have had to take this off which means I cannot use my case front ports :(

Not quite. High resolutions >1680x1050 will make use of the extra memory as well as games that use a lot of textures i.e. FEAR.

Ok i will be running @ 1280x1024 so both cards have same core clock speed and ram clock.

can i expect same performance from both cards?

From the reviews I have read, the card is fine at this res, even 1600x1200 is ok?
He was asking whether the 320mb performed the same as a 640mb, not whether the card will be fine.

The actual question of whether a card will perform fine depends on a number of variables; game, resolution, CPU/RAM, how much eye candy (AA/AF, etc) the user demands.

For the sake of the thread though, the 320mb will perform at a suitable level in most games that don't require large textures to be stored in the GPU's memory and if the user doesn't mind using a small amount of AA/AF. 16xMSAA could be overkill for the GPU in certain games at that resolution for example, but many people can't tell the difference between 4xAA and 16xAA anyway.

Fair point, will teach me to half read a thread :p

Personally, I am happy with a bit of AA as long as I get to use plenty of AF. The main settings I care about are in game detail settings. Hopefully this card will hold me to the NV/ATI refresh happens, then I can chose a new card from there.

My system is a Conroe E4300 @3300 MHZ, 2GB of ram and a P5N-E motherboard, BTW.

I agree mate, the 320MB is still a great card and by no means budget or a slouch. If anyting, it'll probably keep you going past the next batch of new cores released.

Oh, and your system, nice! Everyone is willy-wavin' about with their £500+ CPU/Mobo/RAM, when all I can do is laugh at their sig as £300 will get you a spec just as fast with sufficient cooling and the experience to know overclocking isn't as bad as some stock runners claim it to be.

Highest 3dmark06 score i have so far is 9500 and change.

OCed the card from 550mhz on the core to 600, and 800mhz on the memory to 850mhz.

It got up to 70c while under load in 3dmark, is that normal/high?

lol just a restart got me upto 8690

Mate that confirms what myself and Loadsa got in our first scores, the cpu you have is running slightly faster than mines and that gives you that extra 100points :) so that is a good score, I am @ 9362 now but I know I can push higher ;) just dont wanna clock my card too heavily

I think you have to set HDR on in Oblivion and then set AA on in the driver control panel. On the 8800's there are extra AA modes are only available through the drivers.

YEah oblivion you need to force them using NVidias control panel, just change the game profile :D Keep it on multisampling too or you will suffer to large a performance hit ;)

is anyone else here running a GTS with an Athlon single core cpu? Bit disappointed in my 10500 3dMark05 score but don't know whether it's down to the dodgy nVidia Vista drivers, my underspecced psu or my cpu. Interested to see what others with similar spec but bigger psu get.

edit:- just looked on the ORB and 10500 seems ok for my cpu especially if Vista knocks a few hundred off your score. Looks like an upgrade to a Conroe is on the cards.......

YEah dual core cpu's make a huge difference in terms of the benchies, the processor is ultimately holding your cards performance back! :D

You can, you leave the AA off in the Oblivion Menu and turn it on in the Nvidia Control Panel, whack it on in there, and turn the SuperSampling on as well, looks ******* unbelievable. :D

it so does but kills ** framerate really! Multisampling allows it to run amazing :D

The card arrived this morning, I only ordered it yesterday as well - amazing service from OCuk. The card itself is incredibly - running WoW at 1280x1024 without a hiccup on 16xAA and 16xAF with alpha texture supersampling - it's a buffet for the eyes.

Apparently the latest nVidia Vista drivers do not support AA & HDR at the same time.
