8g iPhone (£169) vs 8g iTouch (£199)

Camera seems so-so i guess, found some other samples on the net. Looks like it will do the job, but i don't think i would buy it based on that feature.

Indeed, it's not marketed as a camera phone. But it's not bad at taking pictures IMO. Only thing it does lack is being able to change settings, but you can change that by downloading Snapture.

My friend (who'll probably kill me), but it's the only shot I have. :o

Just picked it up fellars.

Turns out I started my contract with o2 on 11th september, so i'm allowed to migrate it all over which i have just done :) I'm happy with that as it means my insurance has happily migrated over aswell - and I get to utilise the web browsing etc which is what i ultimately wanted it for.

Goatyman,

Quick question for ya. I have an existing 18 month contract with o2, which started sept time too. Did you just pitch up in store, tell them what was what and they transfered your existing number and contract onto the iPhone? Did you have to go through any activation stuff, or was it turn it on and bingo, all working?

Am seriously considering getting one, now they are so cheap. Would do the jailbreaking if i need too, but would prefer to do it the 'official' way 1st.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Shelster - i went into store and just bought the iphone and took it home. I have found in the past unfortunately that most store staff are pretty useless (of course this is not true of all of them), but I tend to prefer calling.

If you registered with o2 before 19th september, then go for it. Buy the iphone, activation is done by yourself:

1. Update itunes to latest version
2. Plug iphone in - activation automatically starts
3. Select migration (it'll be obvious), basically moving your contract over. You'll need to put your mobby number in.
4. Select the tariff etc.

Now, mine activated in about 5 minutes, and my iphone was ready to use on my number :)

Edit: if you registered after 19th september you have to pay a 200 pound contract cancellation charge, BAH!

v.simple really.

Edit 2: Warning, the first o2 shop i tried was out of stock, fortunately Kingsotn has two :)

Goatyman,

Just checked on my 02. Looks like i have a 24 month contract but has a renewal date of 25 Sept 09. POOH

Don't wanna pay a cancellation charge, cause whats the point then in getting a cheap iPhone.

Guess I will be jailbreaking one then ;-)

I read in an pwnagetool tutorial, that they recomend you install BSD Subsystem and SSH after pwning the phone.

Is this really needed? If so, what is it?

BSD subsystem basically lets you install the good apps.

SSH is a way of entry in to the phone via a Mac or PC (think FTP)

None of them are needed, per se.

I had NO idea that you could get an iPhone without committing to an 02 contract! N95 is going on the bay asap. If I can get the unlock code from T-Mob then I'll probably get pretty close to £169 for it

So they can be put on if ever i need them?

Yes, both of them can be added from the Installer menu

They can't be removed though.. (not that they use up much space!)

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!??!!

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!??!!

well when they first came out I wasn't interested due to the high price tag and of course I thought you had to have an 02 contract, started looking into it when I saw the price had dropped so much for the 8gb! And I bought an ipod nano about a month ago....

Quick question can I use the iPhone sim free? as in just use it for photos and Music? as I wanted a Touch but if I can get iPhone for £170 lol rather do that?

bah t-mobile want to charge me £15 for the unlock code, I'm hoping I might get it cheaper at a shop somewhere. Should be worth it as it will add a fair bit onto the selling price.

Yes, but you will get a prompt when you turn it on to tell you there is no sim card in it.

For the sake of the extra functions, might as well put in a PAYG sim card.

Yes, just activate it (and jailbrake if you want to) and you can run it without a SIM in there.

Cool cheers guys :-) might pick one up next week then, always got a backup phone then so might just put a PAYG sim in there.

Looks like I'll be picking up one of these and selling my Ipod Touch and Viewty. Love both of them but having them both in 1 device would make things much simpler.

Another benefit is that the iPhone updates have been free whilst the iPod Touch you've had to pay for.
