970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

This truly is a masterstroke by Nvidia. So many people seem to be upgrading to 980's! Genius.

I don't want to but I have no choice, the 290x is great value for money, but I want a card that's silent, unfortunately AMD don't have any that fit the criteria

I wish I ordered my gigabyte g1 gaming from here. I got it from a company that rhymes with van, I requested a rma on Tuesday and still not heard anything even after 2 phone calls! It was only £7 cheaper and I wish I had paid the extra £7 and got from here as it would have been sent back already for a 290x 8gb.

What is the official deadline for RMA? Want to get money together for 2 980's as I'm tied to 3d vision ;_;

Till the end of February

The Tri-X is the best temp and sound wise I have tested. No backplate though.

The heat output and power draw on a weak PSU might be points to worry about, but a custom cooled 290 isn't necessarily a loud card. Check out Anand's review of the 290 tri-x. Far quieter than any comparable card under load.

Edit - didn't have a review of 290 vs 970 but 41db isn't loud by any stretch. I'll look for 970 noise levels now.

Edit 2 - 47.5db for an evga custom cooled 970 under load, so substantially louder.

Lmao, depends which reviews you want to cherry pick, most of the reviews have various 970's at <40db

That, and several other reasons are making me hesitate on change at all, especially to a 290x. My MSI GTX 970 is very very quiet.

For those with a 290x are the fans in actual use as noisy as the videos I have watched on Youtube makes out...?

I haven't picked the one above as being the worse of what I have seen but how typical is that of a referance design card and are others any better..?

That reference cooler is pants, but the aftermarket board ones are pretty cool and relatively quiet. I tried a Sapphire 290 Tri-X once, and it was perfect.

Gibbo mentioned 11 cards (of 20K sold) 2 days ago if I'm not mistaken. Not sure how many atm with OCUK accepting the more popular brands.

20k sold! Fair play..... That's a lot of cards. When you think about how many of that 20k will be non-aware of the huge furore from this semi issue, the returns may not be that much of a bank breaker.

If you aren't happy, get in touch with trading standards (in Bolton ?).

Mention the basic issue, and that OCUK are offering refunds.

If you get a positive result, you know where to buy your replacement card from !

Is that a reference cooler? I have heard they can be very noisy. But tbh, my 970 reference gets loud if you ramp the fans up past 50-60%, and at 100% WOW! But it would never get that high in games... most I've hit is just under 50%, and with sound coming through speakers I can't hear it. You can probably artificially ramp the speed up on any card and create noise. And inside a sealed case, that deadens noise too remember.

Here's a Tri-X;

That seems "better" but my MSI GTX 970 is very quiet when playing games, I seem to be more sensitive to noisy fans these days.

The last AMD card that I had was a 4870 and that was too loud and hot.

Feel for you, seen customers asking for help on their dead forum and FB page, they just seem to be ignoring customers and spouting same old script.

This is how OcUK is different good or bad news we keep our customers informed around the clock and are very pro-active, when I was made aware of this last Tuesday meetings were had with the owners, then our sister company Caseking the following day announced they would take all RMAs back at their own cost. OcUK had to do a lot more work in the background due to volumes sold but that following day we had a meeting with EVGA and other board partners and launched that certain brands we could now take returns on as they had agreed to support OcUK. We then gave the remaining brands a deadline (end of week) as we intended to accept all cards back with or without their help, so potential big financial cost to OcUK but thankfully nearly all brands gave us a positive answer by our deadline, others soon came back to us after we made our public announcement and only Gigabyte was left in the end who promised us an answer by next week, but OcUK will cover all cost should they not support us.

This is how OcUK is different, I fight like crazy to get customers best deals, exclusives, customer support and will happily work around the clock to achieve it.

I hope those guys sort you out I really do and if they do not in say a week or so let us know and we shall see if we can step up and sort what they failed to do. :)
