970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Fair play to those who bought a 980 and fair play to those that returned and bought a 290 and fair play to those that keep the 970. I certainly won't be judging anyone on what they choose to do with their own money.

I saw this earlier so I contacted Gigabyte UK to ask about this and this is the reply I just got back from Gigabyte:

Hello,

Sorry but Gigabyte are not a retail seller of any form and do not sell or swap goods direct to the public that are not faulty or offer payable upgrades. We are not any form of shop or retail outlet and/or warehouse and do not keep stock. Please take up any upgrades or direct swaps/refunds with your seller as they sold you the item(s).

Our official statement is as follows in regards to the GTX970 Nvidia memory configuration issue:

//• GTX 970 is an excellent performing product that delivers the promised performance. It is NOT faulty.
• There is NO need for any customer to return it to us.
• Gigabyte Do Not accept returns for a product that is functioning normally.

This admin dept at the time of writing, knows of no other statement or message apart from the one given above which is what we are informing customers with. The one you have advised us off though below will be investigated officially and has been forwarded on.

Therefore unless the item is faulty (memory issue is excluded as this is not a fault), please take up all other options with your supplier only and return the goods to them. This e mail address is only for customers requesting direct assistance for faulty VGA’s or motherboards for repair only. The Nvidia memory design issue is affecting all hardware manufacturers.

Regards

Returns Admin Dept

So there you go. It would seem that Gigabytes official position is that there is no fault and there won't be any returns or refunds. The other message seems not to be accurate at all. As it is Overclockers have promised to take back any 970 cards from all manufacturers but it would seem that Gigabyte cards are going to be at Overclockers expense. Personally I was still on the fence about what to do with my 970 SLI set up but this attitude from Gigabyte has probably pushed me over the edge now. I hate to put it onto Overclockers as they have done nothing wrong but I will most likely be taking up their offer for a refund and then changing up for a pair of 980's instead. I know one thing for sure they won't be a pair of Gigabyte VGA products nor will I ever again buy any Gigabyte products of any kind in the future. Bad customer service is inexcusable in my book and I don't care how good their product is if their attitude to something as egregious as this whole memory mess is to simply put their head in the sand I have no time for them whatsoever.

As Overclockers keep reminding us Customer is king well obviously not for Gigabyte they are not.

Least I know not to ever go for gigabyte or recommend anyone too. Shocking!

Anyone had a response from Gigabyte with Step Up prices yet?

No.. did raise a ticket on their support page, nothing as of yet, and the etailer (if you can call SCRAM that, are silent)

Just had a thought, perhaps the way to get SCRAM to play ball is to contact my credit card company.

Again that is your right, if you choose to buy a 980 its your money not mine. However you cant dispute the fact that your giving more of your hard earned money to a company that slapped you in the face.

I don't see it that way.

I see it as, yep, you have ****** me off, however you have something I want.

** If you have to disguise the word to get it past the filter please take the hint that you shouldn't be posting it **

If it was right for you ..you would have bought a 980 in the first place IMO...

Yes, very true. I have one now though.

Quite shocking coming from Gigabyte, especially after I've just recommended a G1 970 to someone, now reading all this fiasco with the VRAM limitations and whatnot.
Now debating on returning my 970, was wondering why some games wouldn't push past 3500mb often and when it did, it would return to a stutter fest.

If I was to RMA my 970 with OCuk; how long do refunds normally take to process? Some insight would be great from someone :)

Disappointed to see Gigabytes response, Nvidia replay. Guess that's them off my list now, at this rate there will soon be no-one left to buy from*. (*this may be an exaggeration). Have to agree with Gregster, well almost, don't like that Nvidia are getting increased 980 sales but can understand peoples reasons for doing so and will defend their right to spend their money as they see fit. Ocuk have been exceptional in all of this though and will continue to be my first port of call. :)

So what card would you recommend to a disgruntled 970 buyer , that for whatever reasons needs/wants a Nvidia card?
960 is too slow ,, they dont want a second hand card, 980 is the obvious choice.
While i think Nvidia should offer refunds to all 970 buyers there is no point to be gained be complaining about those that choose to buy another Nvidia card

you cant be that disgruntled if you buy another Nvidia, plus you're buying another disaster waiting to happen........4GB is not enough RAM, you're running out of time.

the 290X 8GB will be an outdated in 3 months time, maybe even less if AMD get their fingers out.

the obvious thing to do is therefore to wait and keep using the 970.

Dude tech is outdated soon as you buy it...I see no bad thing in getting rid of a flawed 970 and buying an 8gb 290x

Fact alert an 8 gb will yield better returns when 380 or 390 hits than a gtx 270

Ditching 970 now is the smart choice. Its a bum

I have and will resist the temptation to upgrade to the 290X 8Gb card, not worth it for me, in my opinion. Will wait and see what the 3**X brings. Unfortunately I can no longer bring myself to buy from Nvidia, damn you to hell Nvidia for leaving me with only Amd to choose from. We need more choice for graphics cards manufacturers please someone. :D

Just lol, everyone thought their 970 was the best thing ever and suddenly this news comes out and everyone hates it, despite it still being the exact same thing it always was.

I still really like mine, couldn't be happier! I won't be persuaded based on an unoptimized high vram game

I don't hate my 970 I love it...I'm just disappointed it can't do what I want it to do in March when I upgrade to a 1440p monitor...

I don't thnk anyone hates the 970...they hate the fact that it was gimped and will not have the longevity people who spent 280 plus on it thought it would.

I think also that it's fundamentally a 3.5 gb card which in 2015 is hardly cutting edge...

People are angry with NV ....the card is still what it always was but people change monitors...decide to go sli and have no clear avenue to grow with their systems....

The whole point of sli is to buy one card with the option to plonk another in down the line for most. This now is a bit of a damp squib considering it's would be 600 plus quid of gfx struggling to push 1440p in sli max settings in sli....

The gtx 970 will go down as a flawed masterpiece....brilliant in its poke for the power usage and temps....but ultimately not up for the job above 1080p in future scenarios.

Don't think so

Also for gaming I would take several 2 year old Titans over anything available at the moment. Not only do the Titans have 6gb they are also very smooth at high resolution when several are used together.

TBH i think the cards like the 8gb 290x's and 6gb titans are the least likely to get outdated in 3 months. The price atm for 8gb 290x's is good buy 2 or 3 and you could sit out a gen or two if you wanted

Not in my opinion when we will not likely see a faster single GPU than two of those 8GB 290X (it only really makes sense to use the 8GB cards in crossfire) until we get a long awaited die shrink.
