970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

The problem of not being a fanboy is that you get to see all sides of the fence so when fanboys post nonsense about stuff they clearly have no clue about you can call them out on it.

Your average fanboy sees this as strange behaviour, I mean, how could someone find products from two brands to be good? It's simply not possible!

It is very possible to find products from both brands to be good. It is actually what you refer to as a fanboy who would be unable to do this.

A good example of both brands having good products is the GTX 980 and 290X. The 980 is good at low to medium resolutions and the 290X is good at very high resolutions.

I have the 970 in SLI and game at 1440P is it pretty much an RMA waiting to happen? I did order 2 Gigabyte G1 Gaming editions to replace my R9 290 just weeks before the memory issue came to light.

The only issue I have is if I send them back what other options do I have? Another £200 each on 2 980's is not possible and I was told at the time that 1 card at 1440P isnt suitable, which is why I opted for the 970 cards :/.

If I leave it and I must lower the settings in 6-12 months I would literally be crying. If I send them back what am I meant to do? Already sold the R9 290. Stuck in an impossible situation. No wonder NVIDIA are not responding.

Do I agree with what Nvidia did? No

Do I like how they aren't accepting responsibility? No

Am I a fanboy? Unlikely, given that I have only ever owned a 8800GT, 970 and now 980, vs countless AMD cards.

Do I have much choice? No. Unless AMD can bring the performance, with less heat and power draw, then me having a 750w PSU, a mATX case, and wanting a multi-card system means I have to use Nvidia.

Isn't SLI meant to extend the life at the top graphics? Obviously not in the 970's case.

I need to figure out whether it would be best to send them back and get my £600 back or keep them knowing that I may need to upgrade them sooner than planned. It is the lack of options that worries me the most. A single 980 would cost what? Nearly £500 and even that isn't suitable for 1440P alone...

If only I didn't sell the 290 already :/. Could have got by on high settings and looked at my options again in 6 months.

The problem with SLI would appear to be that with all that GPU grunt, you'll be bumping in to that 3.5-4GB range more often with certain games at 1440p and above (and that list of games will only grow), and it's within this VRAM range that the stuttering issue is likely to occur, due to how the card has been designed. With a single card, this is less likely, and at 1080p it's also less of an issue. That's how I understand it anyway, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

As for alternatives, it's a tricky one. I would advocate second hand as a stop gap, and then see what the 3xx series brings.

Selling it and then buying something as a 'stop gap' is also flawed, keep the cards, save yourself the hassle and then jump over to AMD. Use the 970s as your stop gap, at least then you can see how they cope with age.

Exactly what happened to me. I sold my trusty old 7950 just before the vram blew up. If I hadn't I would have sent the 970 back and put that back in.

I think nvidea are scum for doing this really and putting people in this position.

As is I'm sending The 970 back as I got a good deal on the 290x lightning. After everything it works out I've only spent around £100 to upgrade from my 7950 so not all bad.
