As for the pole, I'm not sure. I moderated the NASA World Wind forums for about 18 months, basically since just after the program's inception, basically because there were 4 NASA staff and about 3 regular obsessively posting/helpful members (one of which was me) so I grabbed one of the NASA folk and offered to help out.
It's great fun and I read every single post pretty much, even when it was ludicrously busy after the first Slashdotting. It was a nice job because it was a young community bursting to life so us Moderators were there to help people out and keep the forums tidy. There wasn't anything tricky like reading long, complicated threads to work out what was going on, etc. It was exciting and cool and nowhere near as busy as this place (and still isn't, nowhere close.)
I now administrate them and it's quite a different ball game....the forums aren't as busy in terms of posts as they used to be, however the community's maturing and more of the posts are useful (they used to be 80% "help!!11!", now it's mostly 'proper' stuff). So I have to look more at the members and at the forum software and so on, which in a nutshell requires more brain power and results in more e-mails.
I dread to think of the amount of work these guys and gals have yet it's still startling how when I throw a link to a teaboy/girl/Donnie on MSN, quite often it's already been spotted.
Do I aspire to be a Don? I'm not sure....great community, lots of great people, but also a lot of work and I don't manage to get as involved as I used to. Hopefully that means I spam less and post better quality stuff, though
I'd have to say 'no' to this exact question because all I really aspire to be is a part of the community, in whatever capacity that community may decide. Which may be as a normal member, as a MOH, as a UB or as a Don. I really don't mind so long as I still enjoy it and do what I do well.
So would I say no to the chance to be a UB/etc? Hell no....great fun, great experience. I totally wouldn't mind about the earlier comment of having to 'step back' from threads since I don't tend to get involved in battles or discussions with many people and the ones I do would understand if I had to enforce a rule on them.
I don't think along the lines of 'omg power' because the novelty wears off and I've been there, done that. However that doesn't mean it's not fun, or an honour. That's why I adminstrate the WW forums, even if I don't read every single post anymore.
