advice needed, I'm thinking of changing to 40"

32 or 34 at 1440p for me
No scaling used
Would still recommend the glasses though
Your eyesight is precious

And not sure i would go for a va panel
You are aware of va panel smearing?

Did you mention a budget?
That could help determine panel type
Seems we are in a consensus about size and 1440p mostly
But panel type is also something to consider

Not easy nowadays
But if you can actually find a physical store
That has various monitors on display
Might be worth a visit to look at

Pros and cons of IPS and VA though. IPS glow is pretty bad, but with VA it's generally an even level of black.
VA Smearing is most noticeble on dark scenes or difference between light/dark. I don't notice it on Doom Eternal.

Plus it seems curved is more common? I understand higher framerate lessons trailing more, so I'll have to test out once I get a new GPU and sending it 144hz.

Here's video of my samsung 27" (uploading now)

I'm looking at the Samsung, around 200 quid right now

my 27" isn't that old, decent one (MSI MAG 274QRD-QD)

IPS panel
165Hz
2560x1440

as I'm now older and wearing Varifocals i find my 27" isn't right for me anymore, i lean forward to read the text on my screen, so I've just set the text size to 140% and in light of this, maybe upgrade to a 40" to help compensate ?

Internet, videos and gaming is what I do

any advice welcome
Thanks for reading

I would agree with that. I have always thought that the pixel size of 27" monitors is too small.

My one worry would be that a ~38" is very tall, and it is a bit uncomfortable looking up and down when the screen is close. You may be better going for a 38" UW. That's essentially a very wide 27" monitor, and you would still use your 1.4 scaling, but you get a lot of extra width.

The AOC Q27G3XMN
mini LED looks good, but can't update firmware. MXN model. There isn't a 32" though. Decent price also, if you can get it. Could do with curved model though, as colour shift on the far left/right would be different to the center.

Poor blacks with any backlit LCD isn't great, but that seems to be of better design, and VA is generally even so it's not as distracting. IPS blotches would be pretty damn annoying IMO, far greater than a even "gray level of black"

I would avoid edge lit, my samsung is that, it's crap.

I have had ips for many years
Yet never noticed ips glow
I guess in a dark room with a pure black screen
Like people do on YouTube reviews
Yeah you're going to see it
But that's not real world usage

But if £200 is the budget
I guess you're going to get "good" or "very good"
But not "perfect "
Each panel type will have some sort of downside
even oled i guess isn't "perfect"
It's closer to it but certainly not in £200 range

Personal choice again
But a monitor where you cant update the firmware
is a no for me

I'm happy to spend more than 200, ips or VA doesn't really bother me really, just a lot of googled on the subject review website seem to suggest VA over IPS

There's times/games I wish I didn't have a VA. I don't know how mine compares to modern VA

For RTS/RPG it's fine, it's just the odd game/time there are noticeable blurring.

OLED would be ideal...apart from risk of screen burn..

As just mentioned
Mini led would be the step up between ips,va and oled
Got a 27 inch think 576 zone mini led here
Though might be looking at £400+ for those
Not checked mini led prices recently
Less zones probably cheaper
But of course less zones is less effective
As always it just comes down to how much you want
To spend

At least with black Friday
It's an ideal time to pick up a new monitor
But so many to choose from is a bit
Of a headache

Just about all the main oled players
Have followed dell
And now offer 3 year burn in warranty
As it should be considering the cost of an oled
In my opinion

Best to avoid curved screens?
Not necessarily
But it does add 1 more factor
To confuse even more when picking a monitor
Mines 1800r at 34 inch
Very mild
Samsung tends to go 1000r
More immersion for gaming
But for other stuff it may be too aggressive a curve
It might cause things to look a little warped
Like documents, browsers,photos etc
Some do in between at 1500r
This is another area where if possible a visit to
A physical store with the products is a good idea

Curved screens seem to be most common at 32", there's not a lot non-curved

Gigabyte do a non curved ips panel for example
If all the other factors are what you want
Don't let curved or flat be too much
Of a concern
As long as it's 1800r
It really is a very mild curve
Never had a curved panel before this one
And it did worry me i wouldn't like it
And yes for 30+ screens curved is becoming the norm
