Aero/Gains Thread

No I had a P3 before, which was too big for me really. Yeah have wanted one for a while to try and do a few more TT's this one came up at a price I couldn't turn down so here I am. Going to build it up with di2, thankfully already got some spares for that. Then will keep an eye out for a disc and maybe an 808 front.

Already got some 3T bars on the way, so should almost be done by the weekend.

Finally managed to go to an event with a decent photographer! Critique please. Struggling to think as looks like I can get lower, but will close off hip flexor. Possibly lower saddle and push back? My front is very narrow, but got some ski bends on the way to stretch me out a bit and put my hands in a more natural/comfortable position.

Frame looks a tad small for you possible on that first picture?
Reckon you can go lower on front and think you need try moving saddle back slightly to stretch you out more, that will hopefully actually give you a bigger power output as I'd hope that puts your centre more over the BB on that frame but you'll need test that out and see as it could easily cause the opposite.
Front does look very narrow, you look perfect on the bars I think and head position good, just a bit lower and if could stretch yourself out a little more as per above I think you could make some gains with position.

Different colour Velotoze.... other than offering a headshot from 600yards in your next TT, I am not sure what else to advise with regards that :p:p

Sigmasport is having a warehouse clearance sale. Might be a good opportunity to pick up some bits for your new P5!

So annoying this is up in Kingston, want to get up there, but don't want to waste a journey. If anyone goes in and sees any bargain disc or deep section fronts let me know.

I do worry about the frame size, after spunking out so much, don't really want to change it. Agreed on the other bits, will give it a go. Never have any issues hitting my knees or anything though. Reckon if I stretch out I should be fine. Probably going to grab one of the aerocoach saddles too.

Velotoze to match clubs mismatched arms, just shame they don't do blue in the short ones yet!

Daymmm!

Om nom nom. What size did you go for, a 58?

Edit, photo says 51, that must be some odd measurement!

Started to glue my Enves up, couple of layers on both tyre and wheel. Going to ride them the week after next now I am starting to feel fit again. Awesome pics will follow.

Just need to buy a TT lid now!

@SoliD

May seem counter-intuitive, but raise the bars so you can drop your head? Sometimes bringing wrists up has the same effect so worth experimenting with ski bends.

I really need to do some aero testing this month and next so I can adapt over winter to any changes. Finally TT of the year on Saturday and I think that will be it for me aside from a couple of hill climbs (maybe). Been a long season and I'm mentally fatigued above all.

OMS, I'm planning to get the ski bends on and see how this rides and then possibly looking at the Mantis position based upon reading and recommendations.

So I finally got round to sticking the TT conversion on the Turbo and having a play with the position.

I definitely need to get a TT specific saddle as currently it's as far forward as possible (including +5% on the seatpost) and due to being slightly contoured means perching forward on it isn't comfortable.

I'm thinking once I can get further forward on the saddle I'll find my knees don't knock on my ribs when my backs flattened. and I can probably get the gap between knees and elbows trimmed down a bit too.

Generally though this felt quite comfortable for the 30 minutes of tinkering/spinning.

Excuse the 'bibs only' erotica :o

Flattened/rounded my back in a few places and shifted about on the saddle throughout to give an idea

It felt a little quad dominant but this could be due to either setup or just being an unfamiliar position.

Didn't have my PM pedals fitted so just used VP from the turbo (Tacx Vortex Smart) but it seemed to be a more powerful position too though I've yet to record the variance between real & VP.

Aero position of the new 10mi TT record holder. Smashed Dowsett's record for a 16:35!

Been doing a bit on the TT on the kickr. Just an hour at a time on zwift.

Definitely paid off, put my Enves on today and ripped it!

We did a 2 up TT, 37.5km with a cat 4 thrown in the middle to make it interesting.

Most people had arranged teams already. My mate did 120km this morning as part of his ironman build, went home and put his tubs on. Rode out to TT & got a flat. His gf put the baby in the car and brought him a training wheel (understanding!!!).

We got off to a good start, pretty smooth and swapping off well. He dropped his chain at the bottom of the climb at about half way going for the little ring (better now than in Hawaii) cost us 30 seconds but we kept going thinking we could still podium. We were off second, with fastest first so could check the gap at the turn arounds.

He started to get tired but for whatever reason I was just on it today and was pulling massive turns just getting a small rest then going again. I did the majority of the work in the second half. We got second place, 35 seconds down on Strava. No dropped chain, if he'd had his race wheels on we might have won.

Averaged over 40kmh which was what we were aiming to do! The $ for second paid for coffees and cake :D

My first open TT of the year today. 22:22 which was good enough for 3rd, pretty grim conditions with quite a wind. Grippy, lumpy course too. Only managed 330w as I think my position is too cramped up at the moment. Still waiting for an aero lid to arrive, and need to look into a proper skinsuit, as my shortsleeve speedsuit isn't really up to the job.

Ah, you've mastered excuses which is the most important TT skill! Jokes aside, that's a great effort. Good work. Any pics from the race?

No pics yet, I didn't see anyone taking photos.

More excuses, I don't have an aero helmet, my mate had two bottles.

It's an average I'm happy with as you have to make three U turns on single lane road, so have to slow right down and the road is quite rough. On the flat we were probably averaging 43-45kmh.

Need photos of Toms TT build! 330w is still an FTP of 310 or so, if you were on a road bike maybe expect 10-15% higher than that but a low 22 is good.

Yeah, I'm going to get a longer stem so I can move forward a touch which should help uncramp me a bit. That was a hilly course so hopefully a flat course, more watt, aero lid etc I could get close to a short 20.

I used a disc cover for this TT, which seemed to work well, but I'm sure a proper disc wheel would be quicker. Also need a black, or carbon chainring as the silver one looks gopping. It is a 55t though :p

Finally fitted some new bars this week. Went for Specialized Ski to give them a go at £25, pretty much nailed it I reckon, felt really comfy with no arm soreness, stats were much better than they have been today in regards to balance, pedal efficiency, power phase etc, and no saddle discomfort. Will hopefully post some pics later and quick write up in the other thread.

Di2 and New wheels will be in place for next season, as I'll be targetting more hilly technical courses, but with an aim to go sub 20 for 10 and sub 52:45 for 25 on the A3. Won't be going to stupidly fast courses just to post PBs as some do.

But that's the best bit!

Regular 19s on fast courses is the goal next season. Reckon I need 30w between aero and fitness. Obvious aero improvements are:

Do some aerolabbing when there's no bloody wind!
Tripsuit
NoPinz track socks (will happily sacrifice 2w not to wear Tripsockz!)
New front wheel
Go single chainring after SpoCo season
