Afghanistan - 20 years on

So we can take £20 a week off the poorest people in the country, but give a murderous regime half a billion?
Seems about right.
Helping stabilise Afghanistan will probably save a decent chunk of money ultimately. Fewer refugees, for example.

Cutting £20/ week from the poorest shouldn't be used as a reason to cut elsewhere. But, also, I agree we shouldn't be cutting £20 from the poorest (Tories gonna Tory, I guess)

It will go straight in to the pockets of the Taliban. and they will use it to buy weapons.

We will have to see. The Taliban are in an Interesting position right now. If they want to stay in power, they need to build a functional government and society. The US-lead invasion singularly failed to do that, with an awful lot more money invested.

I saw recently that of the 350,000-strong Afghan army, perhaps 200,000 of them were 'ghost soldiers. They didn't exist- the money was being siphoned off through corruption.

So, I guess we should remember where our starting point is here. It'll not be a smooth ride.

The majority of people who receive credits in the UK are in work.

Work more hours then. I used to have to watch what I spent down to the pound while working and never got a single penny from the government, get some overtime, get a few hours part time on a weekend, start your own little side business. Government isn't responsible for your income.

That's great. Now who is going to look after the children while they're working these extra hours?

Watching Russia today the Russians are loving it almost gloating huge propaganda win for them and the Chinese.

I don't know what the Russians think they have. The Taliban dislike them just as much, maybe more because they didn't care how much collateral damage they did.

It was 10k 48h ago. I wonder what it will be a month from now.

Probably a different meaningless figure that's also made up for political reasons and also has little or no connection to the number of people the UK actually grants asylum to. As far as I can tell, the only point of the numbers being thrown out now is to try to swing as many voters as possible. Who's going to check the actual number a year from now, let alone further into the future? If anyone does, how many people will see the true number?
