Afghanistan - 20 years on

There is an attempt at a resistance forming a new Northern Alliance and I believe a few KPF hold outs still - but I don't think they care much for Ghani and not sure who would support them as they are going to need substantial foreign support to survive in a conflict with the Taliban.

Yes Saleh the vice President who is acting on Twitter as if he's the legitimate president. He is working with the late masouds son in Panjshir area.

For the sake of the country I hope no one backs them, but from what I see it's quite an isolated place don't think they can do much harm.

No this won't be the end of it it will be like Syria with proxy militia the Russians and Chinese will back the Taliban and the west will back the ones taking on the Taliban.

He is probably right the Taliban might have more support amongst the Afghan people than we think otherwise the Afghan army would not have fled and most Afghans support sharia law as well.

Most Muslims around the world support shariah law.

Why do you think we have shariah councils on the UK? Do you think they would exist without any support?

Because we got caught up in a mess with no real end game. Unless the US and UK were going to commit forces for generations to Afghanistan there was no other real outcome to be expected.

What he said is incredibly disrespectful to all those servicemen and women who either lost limbs, their mind/soul or worst their lives against this enemy, who were still an enemy just 3 days ago but now are suddenly not ?

Imagine serving over there for 20 years only to be told the people you were fighting weren't actually your enemy but a force for love and inclusion

What sort of image does it send to China & Russia ?

It's the imge it shows to smaller nations that's the real issue.

Russia stood by Assad, through thick and thin. He's still in power.

There are a few local strongmen will see that as evidence of reliability.

Syria isn't exactly a prosperous nation because of it though. China is still bullying HK and all of it's neighbours so they aren't sending a nice message.

I don't know what people expect the UK to do with this. It was a US led operation and the UK was there as support. It will put us off going to wars with the US in future though because what they have done has damaged the UK's reputation. They had our backing and threw us under a bus.

If the Taliban or their friends attack the UK I can't see there being another war or some big operation. We'll get straight to the point and send in the SAS etc to bump their leaders off.

So do you think there would be another invasion in Afganisthan by allied forces if they start to cause trouble ?

As expected, the Australian government is doing the absolute minimum to help Afghan refugees.

Australia will offer 3,000 places in its humanitarian visa program specifically for those now fleeing Afghanistan. Priority will be given to people with family already in Australia, women and girls, children and persecuted minorities like Hazaras.

It is important to note that this is not a special intake of refugees. The 3,000 will come from within the existing number of available humanitarian visas.

Australia is currently offering 13,750 humanitarian visas each year. That number was cut from 18,750 in last year's budget.

So Australia is not going above and beyond the ordinary refugee intake — it is simply setting aside some of those places for Afghans caught up in the current situation.

For contrast, we took in 80,000 Vietnamese after the Vietnam War.

It's not like Aus is short of space either :p

We are :/

But heh, it looks like the Afghan government put their reserves in the US. That's unfortunate for the Taliban :p

It doesn't matter if Syria is prosperous- Assad is still alive and in control. The opposition (including ISIS) was crushed and the Turks got told off by Big Daddy Putin, who let them play with Armenia instead.

I agree with the rest of your post.

LOL @ “the Taliban want an Afghanistan that’s inclusive for all”

If he actually believes that then I have a bridge in London to sell him.

I mean they’re not as bad as ISIS (in fact for their first documented execution in Kabul they dragged the former ISIS leader out of the local jail and shot him!). But I don’t fancy the chances of women under the Taliban, for a start there are now plenty of single guys with guns in Kabul who’ll perhaps be looking for brides fairly soon.
