Age of Conan

True, but isnt that kind of part of being a larger guild, the numeric advantage in combat, all the more so in something like a siege where a defender generally has an advantage over the attacker.

Certainly I wouldnt want to be the guild leader of a guild of 60 people and have to explain to some of them that they cant join in tonights siege because theres already 48 people.

I dont know..I guess it might turn out fine, but god I had enough of even number , instanced combat with Alterac Valley in WoW. I miss the open , large scale combat of things like Daoc, huge epic armies crashing into one another as one stalwartly defends a keep, while the other pummels it with men and siege weapons. The defenders all the while keeping an eye on the horizon in case more enemies turn up. Kind of got the adrenalin going :D

I agree with you, I was just trying to find some positive light from the news :p. It may be the case that it will increase after launch and that stability was an issue with large PVP sieges. I can imagine that with the Dreamworld engine, having more that 100 people on screen may cause quite a bit of slow down on anything but high spec rigs.

Guess so, maybe it will raise post release. Though if it is a limitation of the engine, then they should have been aware of that, and not given the impression that sieges were not instanced, and stated in the interview a couple weeks ago that sieges would involve "hundreds" of players.

I have long maintained that the "internal" testing of the siege system wasnt good enough, and that they should have allowed the beta testers to test the siege system long ago.

I was reading on the AOC forums that they did have 200 vs 200 sieges in the internal testing, so it is possible and it may be they are trying to streamline performance. Nobody knows really.

Yeah I heard that, but I read that it was 200 v 200 "simulated" players, as opposed to actual players. So I am not sure to what extent the simulation ran, was it just 400 people in the area, or did all 400 run about, casting spells, performing moves etc like 400 real players would. Then theres always the inherent difference between running a simulation of 400 people on a machine, and actually having 400 different machines, from all different locations doing it.

As I say, I really think the siege system should have been made available to the beta testers at some stage a while back. All that can be done is hope that it all turns out ok in the end I guess.

planetside proved that large scale battles can happen and how old is that game? granted it didn't have the same graphical commitment or destructable stuff as it looks like AoC has but it worked (most of the time). lag was the biggest problem.

Lag will always be the biggest problem :p

daoc is actually the mmo which holds the record for largest PvP, and again lag was a problem there.
Maybe theyv decided to go with 48v48 for quality over quantity reasons..? The novelty of 200v200 will soon wear off when its deemed unplayable cos of the lag

To be honest the best fun in DaoC was the battlegrounds, where you rarely got more than 50 to a side, so I'm not too bothered. The frontier battles tended to disentegrate into a massive mosh, with no room for tactics.

Some of the best fun I had in Daoc was the massive keep battles of the early days of Daoc.

The trouble as I see it, from a personal standpoint, is that the whole reason why I was on the lookout for a new PvP MMO was because the PvP in WoW was so poor. I grew really tired of the instanced battlegrounds of WoW, the 40 v 40 of alterac valley etc. Yet here is AoC, with instanced 48 v 48 sieges. For me thats just not different enough from the instanced PvP I have grown so tired off, I tire of nice and fair evenly balanced battles where I know exactly how many enemy there will be and where they will be.

Though to be fair, I have never really liked instanced fighting anyway, so its a shame that the sieges have this instanced 48 v 48 limit.

All personal tastes of course, I'm sure some folks will love it.

Star Wars Galaxies had unlimited PvP not even instanced, just in regular game world. When we had some epic battles the lag was insane, you had to wait 10 sec to see if you were still alive.

Hehehe, yeah thats my absolute favourite type of PvP, I remember some of the mass battles in UO, especially around the time of the Trinsic Invasion. Utter mayhem :)

Some of the Daoc keep fights were awesome too, I remember many a time on Guinevere server when we were assaulting an Alb keep, maybe 60 or 70 of us, with others turning up all the time to help out. Then just as we were getting near to taking the keep from the massive Alb defence force, the Hibernians turned up with 70 odd people behind us and crushed both us and the Albs and took the keep. Brilliant fun, great adrenalin rush :)

zones are minute, super minute in fact - and generally very linear and non-roaming. It can look pretty though.
Is it really that bad? If so I will have to pass up on AOC. I like my MMORPG's big thats why I have even given Vanguard another go even with all its faults - I like big.

I am taking the wise route this time round with AOC as I will wait awhile after release to see if it's the game for me.

My early access is finally ready all i have to do now is wait till sunday:)
I watched the trailer, its really good and i cant wait.
