My Q701s haven't even burned in yet. I realise I should at least allow 50-100 hours or normal listening first before making any jump decisions -_-

All the hype buildup for the K712s got the better of me.

The AKG K712 Pro is subjectively as good as a modified Q701:

wow

"Modded Q701: 9.75/10
K712 Pro: 9.75/10

For reference:

Q701 stock: 9
HD-650: 8.75
Annie: 7
K601: 8

I would be happy with either headphone. Due to preferences I prefer the modded Q701 slightly despite no change in score.

If you don't like mods or prefer no bumps, I can definitely suggest the K712 Pro.

To me you can't really say which is better. All depends on preferences."

He rates them as being better than HD650's even at stock but totally outclassing them when modded.

I may need to sell my HD600's if this is the case.

If that is all true then I have found my end game and for less than £100 :D

I don't see the point in spending extra for the K712 Pro.

Some people are putting an extra foam layer to block the hole on the single foam layer between the earpad mesh and driver. Apperently SOME K701s had 2 layers of foam there, one with a hole and one without. I'm wondering what the one without the hole did to the sound. I'm guessing some of the harshness on some music was controlled down a bit and evened out the soundstage.

It just so happens I have a pair of thin foam layers I would test with tonight so will report back.

Edit*
Typical. The time I need foam inserts and I cannot find a single piece at work whereas normally they are everywhere.
