***AKG Q701 Official Owners Thread***

Lol.

Just out of interest why aren't the K712 Pro's (I appreciate this is a thread on the Q701) available here in the UK from more retailers, seems to be only resellers that have them or importing them. Is it just a case these aren't available officially in the UK?

Certainly the HD650's are widely available so you have far more choice of where to buy from. I saw your question in the other thread and I think these are also the same two headphones I am most interested in.

Yep, they use pleather instead of lambskin, plastic instead of metal, one set of pads instead of two and plain cardboard packaging instead of a posh wooden box - in other words they've cut costs in all the right places and if I could afford it I'd be all over a pair of these. :D

Yeah, the cost cutting is amazing.

Plus user impressions say that the modified pads they use by default in the PM-2 (they're giving them for free to PM-1 owners) open up the sound more and make them even better.

You'd probably be better off with the K702 in that case (without the bass port mod).
Bigger sound stage than the Q701 and slightly less bass and may be even more detailed than the Q701 (goes with having slightly less bass).
The K702 gets 10/10 for competitive gaming compared to 9.5/10 for the Q701 from MadLustEnvy's thread on Headfi.org.

It also doesn't have that intensely annoying bumpy headband :)

I've owned the HD595 and it's the best gaming headphone you can buy second hand for the money apart from the AD700.

HD595 is worth like £50-£70 and the Q701 in the UK is like £220+.

I doubt it's worth upgrading tbh, there isn't £150 worth of difference for gaming. If you could get the Q701 for the drop price of £100-£120 then yeah it would be worth upgrading no doubt.

HD595 is better than a stock HD558 for gaming (i've owned both).

I'll list what I own;

HD600, Fidelio X1, Q701, HD558, HD25-1 II

Owned in past;

HD595 and HTF600

I sold my HD595 for the HD558 because I am going to mod the 558 into 598's which are basically an upgraded 595, sold the 595 for like £50 and paid £80 for a brand new pair of 558's, that was worth the £30 upgrade after I mod them when I get some time to do so.

If you own the HD595 there is no point upgrading from them from a gaming point of view (competitive gaming that is), unless you can get something comparable to Q701's for cheap, for music and movies though I would upgrade to something better if your using them just for gaming I'd wait for another deal to come along.

In fact the SoundMAGIC HP200 Headphones are on sale atm on massdrop, go for them if you want a cheap upgrade, they retail for £220 here in the UK, and massdrop have them for cheap. Use the link below to sign up

then search for them, only 2 days left so be quick they are superb and worth upgrading to for gaming, music and movies, they are also low impedance so don't need an expensive amp.

One you're missing is the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X, which he also gives a 10/10 Legendary status for competitive gaming.

It's probably the most bass light of them all and so is likely to provide the most positional accuracy, as it seems to score inversely with the amount of bass present.

Which is why I'm not a big fan of his ratings. Positional accuracy is dependant on much more than just the amount of bass relative to the mids. He barely seems to consider separation, clarity and soundstage. It's a good place to start, but a million miles from the be all and end all of gaming headphone guides.

he does say that the 700's have the biggest sound stage he's ever heard (up to the point of writing it). I don't agree with a lot of what he says but he does seem to pick out the best for the job, even if his reasons are a little woolly. The ability to produce clear, accurate positional audio cues has to be there to begin with, it's just in a lot of cases (like the DT770) it gets drowned out by the bass. So anything with a lot of bass is at a disadvantage to start with.
