***AKG Q701 Official Owners Thread***

Thanks for your reply.

Can you be a bit more specific in how they are better for FPS gaming?

To clarify from my perspective, I am looking for headphones that provide useful attributes for "competative" FPS gameplay, such as:

* wide soundstage
* good presentation of details
* good presentation of directionality and positional sound
* avoidance of overbearing bass

Ultimately it all depends on how you're powering them and what kind of gamer you are as well. The HD595s are not bad gaming headphones by any means. I've spent years owning in TF2 hearing Spies de-cloak behind me and wherever I hear them de-cloak they have always been wherever I turn around and open up my faithful Tomislov.

The Q701 just makes it better still. Soundstage is wider and you get better depth to games. Bass has never been an issue for me in gaming even on the Fidelio X1 and i will never understand why this comes up so often. Maybe my source output equipment just doesn't cause that kind of muddying of positional audio in gaming like other driving sources do.

Personally I find bass adds to the gaming experience. Nothing like the thump of the Heavy's Gatling gun or the recoil kick you "feel" in your face when letting one rip and taking a Scout's head clean off with the Machina.

PM-1's are £1099

I can't find a price for the UK for the PM-2 yet but in the US they are $699, so I'm expecting something like £599 in the UK

Ouch :eek: Yea, unfortunately too much for me I think.

I have owned and relied on Senn.HD595s for FPSing for many years. They have consistently delivered for me, but I have to say I am tempted to buy and test-out some of these AKGs -- most probably the AKG Q701s (subject of this thread) or the AKG K701/K702s.

You and me both. Although the K702 are a reasonable amount cheaper than the Q701 it appears.

When it comes to competitive gaming the difference between HD595, HD598, AD700, Q701, etc and any other top gaming headphone in terms of making you any better at hearing footsteps etc will be minimal at best

i personally wouldn't upgrade from HD595 to either of the above if it was going to cost a lot of money, the HD595 for gaming is brilliant.

for music and movies though I would opt for HD600 or Fidelio X1's

Hang on I still have 3 spaces on the mug holder! :)

Just curious to hear some of the headphones mentioned although I already sense the HD650's are the upgrade I will enjoy the most.

I still fancy taking the plumbing route and use plastic waste pipes to build a custom jobbie, either a two way T or a four way H with a bigger, heavier base. :)

Missed this. It would actually be very easy to do, structurally. Aesthetics wise would be the challenge, the ones I've seen or tried myself always look very much 'diy'. Much harder to attain a professional sort of look with.

If we still have some pictures pipe knocking around at home I'd be happy to set up another stand (only single though- don't have enough 'phones for anything else :() and make a thread about it - give people some ideas?

PVC somehow autocorrected to pictures, that's impressive. I'll be back from holiday on the 16th, I'll do a 'stock take' when I recover from the jet lag and try and knock something up :p

Yeah, we got hit by the remnants of the hurricane that America rejected, so it's a little soggy here at the moment - at least it should avoid the need of a hosepipe ban.

Three weeks in Tobago - I really feel for you, it must be hell :D

Was a little awkward during Emancipation Weekend ;)

Back on topic, to all Q owners that like ambient electronica/IDM, give Tycho - Past is Prologue a listen :o!! Any of Tycho or Boards of Canada, actually - so spacious and a gorgeous eargasm-inducing sound.

Flight grounded due to a mechanical error, oh well, what a shame. A few more days, all expenses paid, in paradise then....

On the plus side, I know I have the raw materials at home, so I shall start on it when I get back :)

So it's been a while now and I've used these pretty much daily and/or nightly. Still look like new and I'd say the pads have lost some of the stiffness (good).

The problem is I think they need some WD40 because they creak and groan when handled lol. If they didn't sound so so good I'd be putting them on classifieds but alas, for the price I can't think of a pair of headphones that would offer a reasonable upgrade.

Lord help me by the time I do upgrade to something like the K812 Pro and they are of the same construction...

My dream headphone right now would be the Q701 but using the construction of the Philips X1 for sure. That reminds me, I should keep an eye on X2 prices...

Philips have definitely spoiled us with the quality of the X1.
