With the Q701 arrival imminent I thought I had best get to work.

Green and blue any one!

Vandamme mini starquad XKE cable silver plated OFC, stripped, twisted and finished with paracord. 1.5 meter length.

The paracord finishes cable off nicely.

Is the cable fairly heavy or light in weight?

Total weight including connectors? 46 grams, remembering this has a hefty 1/4" jack on it though. Rean/neutrik connectors are quite heavy duty, they do some lovely silver nickel/gold plated ones too. The one I made for my X1's with the outer sheeth still in place. I'm thinking of dismantling this though and finding something to tidy up the opening on the connectors as they accommodate quite large cables and even this at 4.85mm looks a little lost in it. and I would like to finish both with some heatshrink over the cable/connector.

Cable itself? Not heavy at all, the cores are quite thin and flexible, you loose a little flex twisting them and braiding them tight but this is for desk use so the little I do loose makes no impact. even with the outer sheeth on it surprised me how flexible it was for a 5mm cable.

The Mini XLR to 1/4" cost £6 for materials and the 3.5MM to 1/4" about 40p less.

postage came to about £5.50 for the lot. I did order enough to make 3 cables but decided on 1.5m instead of 1. so the 3m of cable did just 2, cable is only £1.60p a meter though.

That actually sounds quite decent. Any link to that particular one? :)

Updated that post with he picture, stupid mobile photobucket takes an age at times!

Hmm looking good!

I think if I do really like the 701 then what I will likely end up doing is just cutting the 20m cable it comes with to around 1.7m and fitting one of those mini XLR plugs on. Saves having to deal with sorting out the jack end then too I guess. Or do it vice versa if the 3.5mm end is easier to manage which I think it will be. Just need some good quality solder to do it with I guess!

The jack will be easier, slightly, either is really not a challenge though. I used 4% silver solder but only because I had a small amount sitting around from another project I had a few years ago. Decent quality solder would do the job just fine.

Ah excellent. This seems to look like it will do just fine.

Edit*
Might as well upgrade the soldering iron too, Gascat 60 looks the business :D

Get some decent flux, silver solder is a sod to flow, my 4% is a pain, that 4.7% i would hazard a guess at being a nightmare :D

I'm probably telling you how to suck eggs here but it's worth mentioning just in case someone else decides to try and doesn't realise, don't want someone melting the mini xlr trying to flow the stuff.
